[opensuse] Problem with Video on All released iso images and fresh install.
Hello, I have a system that I just can not seem to get the video to work. After a fresh install any video mode gives me a grabled screen. Just like with all the ISO images after the first selection menu. Boot from Hard Disk, Installation or any option. It does not matter what I choose in the F3 Video. I have found that I am able to use the 12.2 media and do an install or rescue system. What I do is boot off the CD or DVD and choose Hard Disk I then let Rescue or install find the source in /opensuse/distribution/12.3/repo/oss When I do this I am able to use the screen all the way through till it reboots then the video is messed up. With the rescue system, it boots off the HD and does an initialization which I am able to see. It does everything just like a normal system except it gives me the Login and I am able to login. How do I get the system to be able to have a display like with the 12.2 media but everything shows a 12.3 install or boot for rescue just like on other systems. Any ideas on what I may do to get a screen. Usually I am able to get a network going and work on the system remotely. I have been unable to get a display on the main console. Any ideas? Hi Boyd, Could you be a little more specific? What hardware is involved? What 'flavor' of 12.3? Thx! Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Boyd,

Actually all flavors. What the system is a Intel Server MB. X86_64 It is the onboard video. I have tried every ISO image. The all burned and verified. Not one does not have the video problem. I was able to do an install and resscue with the X86_64 DVD, Net Install X86_64, as well as all most all media. As long as the Media has the F4 source option and I am able to choose Hard Disk and put in the 12.3 repo I am able to install or use the rescue system. The problem is on first boot after a fresh install. After that is does not matter the video is messed up. -- Boyd Gerber <gerberb@zenez.com> 801 849-0213 ZENEZ 1042 East Fort Union #135, Midvale Utah 84047 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No mode works at all. All ttys are blank or grabled. Same as when I try to use any 12.3 Media. Only a 12.2 CD/DVD is able to allow me to see things and then only an install or rescue. Sadly, I am unable to get a network right now. I have to use ifup and not Network Nanager. When in resuce mode if I change the Network Nanager to tradtional I am able to see the network configuration exactly as I want it to be. But when saving It errors off with no network and does not save it as Traditional. Sadly all the solutions for this I am unable to do because of the Video so I am in a catch 22 situation.

Yes, using that with All the 12.3 media has the same problem. First thing I tried. on the Media after going through ever F3 Video Mode trying to do the install. OK, but I was thinking more of what is in F5: noacpi (plus nomodeset) or even Safe Mode. Easiest fix might be if you have a video card you can stick in it long enough to get xf86-video-mga-1.6.2-2.4.1 installed. This server board comes with 'dual-video mode' enabled by default in the BIOS. If you disable this mode, the on-board graphics controller that is giving you trouble will be disabled when you install a better supported graphics card -- something really minimal and cheap but well supported -- just long enough to get the installation and all the updates done. Then you pull the cheap card out and run it headless, like any other server. http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5520hc/sb/e39529013_s... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Using Grub the above line does give me a display.
For more fancy/effective graphics on the console you can try using matroxfb: No "vga=" but "video=matrox:vesa:792" (hex: 0x318 = 0x118). This would give you 1024x768 @ 32 bpp. See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/matroxfb.txt for details. All in all: kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdg3 video=matrox:vesa:792 \ resume=/dev/sdg2 splash=native showopts nomodeset or with hex: kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdg3 video=matrox:vesa:0x318 \ resume=/dev/sdg2 splash=native showopts nomodeset If that works, you can use splash=verbose.
