If I use apt to upgrade k_deflt can I go back to my original kernel if it doesn't work? i.e. will it install it as a new option on the grub menu? Phil

NOTE: This works for kernel-default on SuSE Linux 9.1. I don't know if this works for k_deflt and SuSE Linux 9.1 or earlier. ---- Better /download/ the other kernel, and install that manually with the -i option. Reasoning: the current kernel is kept, and the new kernel is installed *next* to the current kernel. You'll get two extra symlinks in your /boot/ directory: vmlinuz.previous and initrd.previous (will point to the previous kernel & initrd) and there are the symlinks vmlinuz and initrd that will point to the new kernel and initrd. Make a new entry in your /boot/grub/menu.lst that uses vmlinuz.previous and initrd.previous. That way booting into the previous kernel becomes easier. * * * * If you use lilo, you must run lilo *BEFORE* rebooting! * * * * Finally, you may want to add an extra line in your /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/apt.conf: RPM::Allow-Duplicated { "^k_deflt$"; }; Cheers, Leen

Correction: This works for kernel-default on SuSE Linux 9.1. I don't know if this works for k_deflt and SuSE Linux *9.0* or earlier. Cheers, Leen
