Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Recurring Printer Problem
Hi Phil, I'm sorry that I can't offer any help to your problem, for I can't even get my HP deskjet 520 printer detected by Yast. I've used RH 5.0 and it sees the printer just fine. Within Yast I can only choose 'postscript' printer, there a name 'HP printer' there but I can't pick it (Its not high lighted). Shown below is a excerpt from Yast. Couldn't find the Postscript-Emulator"Ghostscript". You can only use real Postscript printers! < Continue > If you have any clues to why I can't configure my HP printer, please feel free to reply. Thank you in advance for you help. Regards, -Chris On Tue, 19 May 1998, you wrote:
Okay, this is about the third or fourth time I've run into this problem. It usually starts with me trying to print from Applix...the result is that the spooler hangs up. I finally end up restarting Linux and have no files in the spool. But then lpr won't print. In fact, I can't find any activity in either lpq or lpc. I've tried starting, stopping, cleaning, restarting, aborting, enabling, etc. All to no avail. The last few times I have _fixed_ this by having another problem crop up that required reinstalling Linux. But I would like to fix this without a total reinstall. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thanks.

Hello Chris, first of all, did you install the package "gostscript"? If I look into my yast setup (printer setup), I press cursor down and can select between PS-Printer, HP-Printer and Others. choosing HP gives me a list of HP-Printers, the 520 is not on the list, you should use a compatible instead. If this list does not pop up, i recon gostscript not or faulty installed and would start my investigation there. Chris, I know it's a drastic solution but have you considered reinstalling Linux? Sometimes that's all that works for me. In the meanwhile I'll keep you in mind. Phil -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

That sounds like you did not install ghostscript. The packages have the names gs_..., e.g. gs_x11-5.10-0 gs_fonts-5.10-0 gs_lib-5.10-0 (these 3 are on my system) The 5.10's are not on the CD-ROM (lizence problems) but aviable from the SuSE FTP site(s), as the SDB page (if you installed it) file://localhost/usr/doc/support-db/sdb_e/new_gs.html shows. The job of ghostscript within the aps-filter is to re-convert from postscript into the native languages of the printers. If your printer is supported by the new gostscript but not really by the old one, get the new one, it's worth it. (At least it was for my EPSON LQ-850)

Ah, but that won't help here. It won't help in this special case (because ghostscript won't be installed after the reinstall, either) nor is reinstalling (after you have done any amount of configurating) a viable option. Of course, it might be OK if you do it just after you installed it the first time ... just to do it right this time, but generally it won't solve problems. Anyway, you pay too much if you do it. IMHO. Usually a problem can be solved by looking at the error messages, the log file, the documentations/FAQs/etc. and then checking things. And you learn a lot along the way, too. :) (And, this is not (buggy)-binary-only Windows ...) -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key".
