Problems with my sax!!
OK, I have gotten SuSE Linux installed on my home system, but everytime I try to configure it to use the GUI my system hangs and the speaker goes into overdrive with beeps. I install the basics (just under 300 meg) and it goes fine, command prompt (SuSE prompt?) go into Yast and configure what I know for now. But as soon as I try to start up SaX my system goes belly up. It tells me what graphics card I have, and asks if I want to enable 3D on it, and no matter what I tell it (that being the options of yes/no) the system goes into epileptic fits. Here is a basic rundown of my system: MSI K7T266 Pro motherboard Athlon 1700+ cpu 512meg DDR RAM Chameleon GeForce3 Ti200 AGP w/64meg DDR memory 40gig Maxtor drive - running WinXP 30gig IBM drive - trying to run Linux DVD drive - forget brand Lite-On 24x12x12 CD-RW Linksys Ethernet card SupraMAX 56i modem Soundblaster 16PCI soundcard Think that wraps it up. Anything you can do to lead me back onto the path that is good and righteous would be appreciated! Greg Hicks

I install the basics (just under 300 meg) and it goes Please do the install labelled "default plus office" ..by the amount of space you have said your install has taken. I know this isn't the case. You won't get a good feel for SuSE if you have to keep shoving the CD's in every few minutes because there is something missing. I think with a 30G drive you can spare the space :) ::Chameleon GeForce3 Ti200 AGP w/64meg DDR memory Please go to http://www.nvidia.com/drivers and get the current nVidia driver for Linux. SuSE doesn't ship them because they are binary only and from there point of view a support nightmare. The default Xfree86 driver doesn't do 3D very well if at all. You can take a look through the archives of this list. I think I've explained about 30 times in the last 6 months how to install them.. Landy (RR) being the last person I indepthly explained this to. :) The do work..I can tell you this. I have EVERY Loki 3D game and a few not by Loki and they work without a hitch (my opinion..flames go to /dev/null :P ). This is the best bet for your card to work well. ::Think that wraps it up. Anything you can do to lead me back onto the path ::that is good and righteous would be appreciated! Well, I wouldn't say that it puts you on any sort of path accept the one to a good experience with Linux. :) Cheers! -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- "I've never been quarantined. Are you running with the mem=nopentium kernel parameter? This helped
me a lot. I was getting X lockups every few days, usually in Q3A. I
have a very similar system. PogoLinux Altura workstation with MSI
K7T266 Pro 2 motherboard, VisionTek GeForce 2 video, etc.
