Re: [SLE] YOU's "Protected - Do not modify" feature

01/19/06 1:32 AM >>> Hello everyone, I'm running SUSE 10 and I'm having problems with the latest grub update. I'm unable to boot with it so I reinstalled the stock one.
Now, I'm still getting the notification for this grub update (which I don't want). I went to Software Management and then looked for grub and I marked it as "Protected - Do not modify". After this, I'm still getting the SUSE Watcher notification. Obviously, it didn't care that I already marked grub as "do not modify..." I also noticed that when I visit -once again- Software Management... grub isn't marked as "Protecdted do not modify". As soon as you close "Software Managemnt" it forgets it.
Any ideas anyone? I just want SUSE watcher to turn red or orange ONLY IF there are any updates besides grub. I thought I could accomplish this by marking it as "Protected - do not modify" but it doesn't work.
Thanks in advance, Jorge
I don't know specifically about SuSE Watcher, but I have found that as well as marking a package as protected, which you can only do once it's installed, you also need to install/uninstall something else from the same software repository for that change to take effect. For example, to mark ApplicationA as protected, it must already be installed. Go back into Software Management, mark it as protected, then select another application (typically something small) then click Accept and ApplicationA will stay as protected. If you have setup multiple software repositories to install from, the additional install/uninstall of another software package must come from the same repository that ApplicationA was installed from. For updates, just set the update to Taboo - Never Install and that will stick. I don't think it does (YOU doesn't honour the taboo flag. It was never designed to do so ...). https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=141234 But you could do rpm -e --justdb grub to make RPM believe that there is no grub package installed. That way YOU won't consider the available grub update as relevant for your system. It's a workaround, but it does work. Greetings from Stuhr hartmut

I noticed that.

Arrrrrghh that's wonderful! That's exactly what I needed: remove grub from the rpm database but still keep the grub files around. Many thanks Hartmut! Also, thanks to Stepthen and Carlos for the comments. -- Jorge
