[opensuse] Distributing Tasks between 2 Computers
Hi, i would like to operate a second computer so i can use more hard disks and CPU power. Is this easy to do with 1 monitor and keyboard ? I am already using a simple router. What is the best setup you would recommend ? Kind regards Philippe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

best is to have two separate complete ones, there is always something that need rebooting (let alone kernel updates) or other urgent thing when you are compiling any video or printing very long manual... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

???? With the included remote desktop software included with Linux, there's no need for that. I use XDMCP among all my computers and it works well. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

A KVM is simpler. Unless you rally WANT two monitors, two keyboards and worst of all, two mice on your desk

Like everyone is installing the nightly kernels.... I typically go several WEEKS without rebooting. And that has to do more with memory leaks in apps than the OS itself.

I do 3, 3, 3, except I use trackballs, and don't use "a" desk. -- "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." may be, but it's always at the bed time :-). I also do many video compile (~4/5 hours) and dvd burning that are better done on a separate computer and a good kvm module is expensive (more than keyboard/mouse). Not nearly as expensive as a 2nd monitor. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Also, Linux tends to have a problem with the mouse, if a KVM is used. If z-axis is enabled, the mouse will go crazy, when switching systems. This definitely happens with PS/2, but I don't know about USB switches. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That depends on the KVM. Well-designed KVM's that don't let voltages float don't induce that problem. The difference between a well-designed KVM and not is one resistor per computer-side mouse connection, which comes to a manufacturing side cost of about $0.05 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

A KVM switch usually is OK if the machines are close together. Otherwise have something cheap and cheerful on one and drive everything else via X on your main machine. Usually is not too much of a problem... Thanks jdd, gandalf and ka1ifq for your replies. Buying a second monitor would be great, but i don't find a big one with 24bit and affordable.
http://en.opensuse.org/Remote_Access_to_SUSE explains that the best way to run GUI tasks on a second machine, using one monitor and no KVM, would be to establish a network and then use NX by Nomachine.com. Is FreeNX which he doesn't mention better ? VNC apparently is * - Difficult to install and use (... lets not dwell.) * - Slow * - UnSecure * - Can not adjust to different client monitor sizes easily * - Bad server and client management (... lets not dwell.) :-) Kind regards Philippe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

yes, very slow (but I used it years ago on slow hardware) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why not simply "ssh -X <hostname> ??? Thats what i do when i want to run something intensive. My main workstation is an older p3 @1 ghz with a triple head setup. My "cruncher" is a p4 ht @3Ghz, no keyboard, mouse or monitor. It is placed in a closet in another room. Over a 100 switched network its fast enough for heavy gimp. and other tasks. Sure, i dont run GAMES over that line. but then again, i never play so... -- /Rikard ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- email : rikard.j@rikjoh.com web : http://www.rikjoh.com mob: : +46 (0)763 19 76 25 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

That's never been a problem that I've noticed
* - Slow
Kind of, yes
* - UnSecure
Definitely... but if both machines are in the house, behind a firewall, it's not something I would worry about.
* - Can not adjust to different client monitor sizes easily
Not an issue for what the OP describes.
* - Bad server and client management (... lets not dwell.)
Again, I think that accusation is overblown.
:-)

Remote desktop support is already built into Linux. One method is to use XDMCP, which will allow you to access the desktop of a different computer and switch between computers. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I believe you can send X through ssh, though I've never done that. You can also use a VPN, which I have done. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can ... ssh -Xf [<username>@]<hostname> xterm at CLI, which works well for me as a starting point for local access.... I vaguely remember having to do something with the config to get it to work but that was a loooong time ago. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
