[opensuse] update mess
While attempting to update 12.1 to 12.3, I've gotten into a situation where I can no longer boot. To describe where I am now: Grub menu shows 12.3 (Windows has been lost, but I'm not really concerned about that). If I try to boot this, it returns "Error 22: partition not found." I assume this refers to the location for root, specified in the boot line for the kernel? I know that that partition is still on the disk and readable, since I have checked from the rescue function on the installation disk. The grub boot line is (assuming I have retyped it correctly): kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz-3.7.10-1.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/raid/pdc_djiegecc_part7 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/raid/pdc_djiegecc_part6 splash=silent quiet showopts Brief history: I initially attempted an upgrade, but ran into space problems in the /boot partition. So I went for a clean install. It failed to format the /boot, /root and /swap partitions, for reasons I cannot tell. I can provides details, if someone will advise me what is relevant. I'm no expert, though I've been running Opensuse since 9.1 (unix end-user before that), and thus can do some command line stuff. Upgrades and installations have always gone smoothly before. What makes you think so? Even if this is raid, error comes from grub which happens way before anything described in above thread.

If what is /dev/sda in OS is indeed hd0 in grub it perfectly explains why partition 5 is not found during boot ...
I notice that no partition is marked as autoraid type, thus the initial booter might not activate it soon enough.
This is fake raid which has nothing to do with Linux MD (and it is assembled using dmraid). Now I do expect problems if kernel is loaded as mdadm has priority over dmraid by default and there was at least one report that this caused failure during boot. But again, this all happens after kernel is booted - OP is not as far. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAlKU9XsACgkQR6LMutpd94xq2wCfTUvGYjoPMpgQ6MfNPpGQ9dM3 /84AoKFrJr281sr+WHgXEWZPHnpYEmOw =hWdc -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Nry隊Z)z{.ﮞ˛m)z{.+:{Zraz'zj)hǾ ޮ^ˬz

Picking up on this observation, I altered the grub boot line to (hd1,4), and lo and behold, it booted. So I think I am in business! Grub was looking at the wrong disk. Thanks to one and all. No. It refers to *grub* file reference. boot line for kernel is irrelevant here.
kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz-3.7.10-1.1-desktop
If this is full menu entry, (hd0,4) does not exist. Otherwise please show full entry without any omissions.
