I ordered the Hancom package Thursday; waiting for it to arrive. Let me know what you find. After all our work getting things working on my system my Nikon CoolScan II has decided to start putting a colored band in every scan. Now I have to find a new scanner to replace it and i haven't found any "reasonable" options yet. Any good ideas or sources for a high quality internal SCSI based scanner.
Hi Prof, Well, I installed the Hancom evaluation, as tempted..... First thing, I like the modularity through HancomShell2, which you can sit on your desktop as a fast launcher to the various components of the suite. Colourful too !! Secondly, I installed the suite in /opt instead of the default of /usr/local.... Might be missing one or two links to maybe fonts and other sets, so when I tried out the Evision , which is ala dia, and called on the stencil set, it locked up. Happily, I could even choose to ignore it and carry on with another component of the suite , or kill the offending application without the whole suite falling. GREAT !! Lastly, anyone else noticed the rendering of word documents with diagram/photo inserts ? My trial didn't come close to mark of SO-5.2. StarOffice just outdid Hansom here. Oh, Dave, About our SCSI chain !! I haven't looked at any other scanner for ages. I'll be all ears for you. Cheers !! -- Kemdi IN_SuSE_d Since 5.2 123792 of counter.li.org ICQ:112290572
There is so much talk that Star Office is no longer available as a free bundle with Linux Suse 7.3. or 8.0. Everybody talks about alternative programs but I still do not know if it has officially been confirmed that Star Office will no longer be available free of charge. So what is right? And if so when will it take effect? With v. 8.0 or a later version?

AIUI, Sun have removed the free beta of their new version (S06). When it is released, 6.0 will be free for non-commercial use, but commercial users will have to pay a license fee. I believe that SuSE and Sun are in talks to work out an agreement to allow SuSE to distriubte SO 6.0 on their disks, but until this agreement is reached, they have removed the 6.0 beta from the SuSE disks. I believe that SO 5.2 remains on the disks. BTW, all this information is hearsay and rumour quoted from memory... 5.2 is still the current StarOffice and hence the one which will appear on 8.0. What happens after that hasn't been announced as far as I know (and I don't know the answer ...) On Tue, 26 Mar 2002, Dave Smith wrote:

For most folks, OO will suffice and be all we need. For those people needing some extra fonts and a lot more support, then Star Office will fit your needs better. Either way we win with some very good office software!

Actually, you can go to Sun's web page and read the details for yourself: (http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2002-03/sunflash.20020319.1.html). The say definitively that Star Office 6 will no longer be free. Also mandrake released details of their inclusion yesterday (http://lwn.net/daily/mandrakeSO6.0.php3). They also say that they have to now pay Sun for every copy they bundle or upload. They have a license that allows them to distribute a fixed number of copies and they have to account for every download and CD. That's why they only allow download for silver members and above. Sun says the price will be nominal. That can mean different things to different people but I think a commitment to only use software that is free is in beer is a bit radical. I don't mind paying a reasonable price for a professional quality and fully supported office suite. Hopefully there are enough of people who agree that we won't miss yet another chance to show software companies that including linux in their list of supported OS's isn't financial suicide. Hell, if this works maybe quicken will be next! Just my .02 JHS
