As some of you know, a few weeks ago, we had a Dell Poweredge 2300 arrive as our new mail server and firewall to our LAN, which includes an RS6000 F40. SuSE 6.0 didn't arrive right away, and because 6.3 didn't support the embedded SCSI controller and video, I played around with RH 5.1 and plugged in the drivers for video and SCSI. Performance was VERY good, but it's just not as polished as SuSE. I formatted the drives when 6.0 arrived, my copy that is....the order for Cornell has NOT arrived yet, and I went to work on the server. The Dell, although not my choice for hardware, has taken to SuSE quite well....VERY, VERY solid! There's 2 Intel nics. in it...one to our LAN, and the other to the new XDSL line. Firewalling and all are now done, and today I started pointing user's Netscape (4.5 for 'DOZE) to the new server. Our users have never been so impressed as many web pages pop up almost immediately!! Now, I'll change over e-mail from the "old" NT server to the Linux server. Any of you who may be considering XDSL, SHOULD do it!! It's MUCH faster than cable yet a LOT cheaper. Our monthly costs are: $250 to our ISP, and $40 per month to Bell Atlantic...that's it! Atlantic Bell charged $495 to install the XDSL line. Best, Fred ----/ / _ Fred A.
