Does anyone know where I can get the gstreamer-lame rpm for Suse 10? I have been unable to find it and the mandrake rpm requires gstreamer08tools which wants to remove 55 packages. This is after a fresh install of Suse 10.0 and update via yast with the latest rpms shown in http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16592.html yast sources. Gstreamer010 still does not have the gstreamer-lame rpm for it as does not the gstreamer0.8.11 that is installed with Suse. I want to use sound-juicer to rip some cds to mp3 for the ipod. Grip works, but is slow as Christmas, especially incomparison to itunes in Windows. Grip takes over 30 minutes for a complete cd where itunes takes about 3 minutes for the same cd. Kaudiocreater does not work as amarok also does not work and they are far to complex for my wife to use. Sound-juicer has the easiest interface of them all. Art

Try adding Packman to your YaST source. YMMV, I usually compile my own.

Grip doesn't do anything by itself. It is just a frontend to several commandline programs. The slowness you experience is due to 2 things: (1) Grip, by default uses an internal copy of cdparanoia. Cdparanoia (one of the best rippers available) is by default slow because it focuses on accurate and error free ripping. If you know that your CD is good and doesn't have any pops or clicks, you can turn paranoia and extra paranoia off although I don't recommend it. (2) The encoder used and its options. Most likely you are using lame. Lame is not known to be a speedy encoder, but it produces the highest quality vbr mp3 files. As an aside, the default options for lame in Grip, is not optimal. I suggest changing it to "--preset standard %w %m" for desktop and "--preset medium %w %m" for portables.
