Why is it, SuSE, that I can log on, log off but can't email to this list?
Using my standard email address I can sign onto the SuSE-linux-e list, and I can sign off of that list. I can download and read email from the list. BUT, I CANNOT send mail to the list. They bounce back with a message about needing a 'fully qualified name". If my jk05308@alltel.net is good enough to sign on and off, and download email from the list, why does it then pick my logon name and domain name (jerry@jerrykreps) as a gatekeeper? Makes no sense. JLK PS. I am sending this question via my Sony precisely because although my Beast can sign on to the list and download email from the list, any email replys or new email is rejected with the msg mentioned above.
Jerry, What do you use as an MTA? sendmail or postfix? Looks like your MTA rewrites (or leaves untouched) the address. Your MUA also may be involved. I've spent once really long time configuring my mail system. I use local userid pike, and I like my machine to bear name fizia. My mailbox at my ISP is kastus@tsoft.com. I tweaked /etc/mail/genericstable, included a bunch of lines there for all possible and impossible combinations of my userid and hostname to make sendmail convert sender address in outgoing messages from me. Unfortunately, pine was not happy with that and my reciepients were receiving mails from pike@fizia.local. Being so frustrated with pine (I hadn't figured out how to change sender address in it) I switched to mutt. I must admit that was a great decision, like starting using Linux back in 1995. I added these lines to .muttrc file in my home directory: set hostname = "tsoft.com" set realname = "Konstantin (Kastus) Shchuka" Since then mutt does the job perfectly. -Kastus On Sat, Mar 24, 2001 at 03:26:51PM -0600, Jerry Kreps wrote:

FYI - in ~/.pinerc you might want to set: user-domain=alltel.net Also, add 'allow-changing-from' (without quotes) to the feature-list, and set default-composer-hdrs=To:, Cc:, From:, Attachmnt:, Subject: This will allow you to edit the From: header in the composer window. Very useful if you have several accounts, and must remember to post to specific lists from the account subscribed to that list. It may also be helpful to set the 'masquerade as' directive in your MTA. In sendmail it's the DM directive. On Sat, 24 Mar 2001, Konstantin (Kastus) Shchuka wrote:
