Opera 8.5 - free and without ads - is now available. I have not installed the previous Linux version (7.54) using YaST, but I would like to try 8.5, so I downloaded the package for SuSE: opera-8.50-20050916.5-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm Where and how should I install it? When I try, I get an error message saying that there is no application associated with the file type (i.e. rpm). I could use YaST to install the old version but I don't see how to use it to install the new version. TIA Kelly -- Kelly J. Morris <kjmlists@comcast.net>
From shell as root: rpm -Uhv opera-8.50-20050916.5-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm Francesco

OK, I tried the above (several times, with variations) but get the following: linux:~ # rpm -Uhv /home/kelly/Documents/ICTs/Linux/opera-8.50-20050916.5-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm error: /home/kelly/Documents/ICTs/Linux/opera-8.50-20050916.5-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm: MD5 digest: BAD Expected(0bb990d3461059ce1b6ca17050fc6fe4) != (f0716f009d24375430f0ce43ed1233d4) error: /home/kelly/Documents/ICTs/Linux/opera-8.50-20050916.5-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm cannot be installed Thanks. Mike - Thanx. As Francesco and Donn indicated, I needed to open a shell *as root* (big "duh" on my part) and then I did as you said and downloaded again. Worked fine. I had used Opera with RH 7.1 a couple of years back or so. I liked it, but was annoyed by the ads. v.8.5 looks nice but so far I see no reason to jump ship from Firefox. Kelly -- Kelly J. Morris <kjmlists@comcast.net>
I installed Opera 8.5 on Suse 9.3 by just clicking on the downloaded rpm in Konqueror and installed with Yast. The things I like on Opera versus Firefox: 1. Zoom works with both text and graphics 2. Popup blocker works better in Opera (Every time I open Firefox, I get a popup. 3. It is faster 4. Does not open new window when downloading files, only new tab. Art - Good points all. I use Gnome and and Firefox doesn't have a "download rpm" feature that I can see. Also, I listen to a lot of international radio stations via the Web and I haven't been able to figure out how to get Opera 8.5 to open .ram files, etc. I had the same problem with Opera and RH 7.1. Kelly -- Kelly J. Morris <kjmlists@comcast.net>
I don't know about .ram files, but I never got realplayer to work in 7.1 or 7.54. It now works. Art On Sat, 2005-09-24 at 20:13 -0400, Kelly J. Morris wrote:

For a single rpm log in as root and from konsole run kpackage first time check the box for test install. If the result is 0 there are no errors uncheck the test and install for real. -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/ | \ /|\ || |\ / |~~\ /~~\ /~~| //~~\ | \ / | \ || | X |__/| || |( `--. |__ | | \| \_/ / \ | \ \__/ \__| \\__/

Actually it was available through YOU (SuSE 9.3) also! I think Opera is just the best... even though it does not work well with gmail (rich editing for instance). -- HG.

Ah, that's why I missed it - I have 9.2 and it's not available with 9.2.

I'm trying it out while still using Firefox. It does appear to be faster, although a bit clumsier for a couple of things that I do. I'll try my gmail account with Opera to see what you mean. Thanx. Kelly -- Kelly J. Morris <kjmlists@comcast.net>
