[opensuse] gsynaptics mousepad tapping
Hi everyone I've set 'tapping' the mouse pad using gsynaptics but it doesn't remain after a new login or reboot. What do I have to do the get mousepad tapping to stick between sessions? OpenSUSE 11.3. I have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the xfce that came with 11.3 Thanks L. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lynn, that setting is found in /home/<yourdir>/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/%gconf.xml in gedit the line is : <entry> name="tap_to_click" mtime="1262834612" type="bool" value="true"/> You might check the permissions of that file and see that it is not root/root. Some of the files in my home directory got their permissions changed to root/root and that queers a lot of stuff. I cured the problem by making sure all files in my home dir are user/users. Richard Hi Richard
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately still no luck. I have to use gsynaptics to make the touchpad tap. I added the line using mousepad and saved the file. The .gconf folder is lynn:users. Still no luck even after a reboot. Here is my .%gconf:xml <?xml version="1.0"?> <gconf> <entry name="off" mtime="1279829823" type="bool" value="false"/> <entry name="max_tap_time" mtime="1279829843" type="int" value="180"/> <entry name="vert_scroll_delta" mtime="1279829823" type="int" value="100"/> <entry name="horiz_scroll_delta" mtime="1279829823" type="int" value="5"/> <entry> name="tap_to_click" mtime="1262834612" type="bool" value="true"/> </gconf> Any ideas? Hi Richard. Thanks for trying. but still no luck with the new .xml file. Everything else works except the tapping either on logout and reboot. Anyone else use XFCE on 11.3? As you say, let's hope some xml or xfce guru can help. Or how I could pass a parameter to gsynaptics. The latter doesn't seem to accept parameters. YOu have to click it to get to the touchpad then click again to enable clicking. Which works so I know it's not hardware. It also works with kde4 where you can set tapping and it stays put. In xfce, I have to enable it each time. A pain! L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I found that the .gconf file doesn't make any difference. I renamed it (as good as deleted it) restarted X and rebooted as per windows and the mousepad worked exactly the same. No tapping. The only one to have an effect was the: Option "TapButton1" "1" So it's not a gconf setting I don't think. Could we get an xfce expert to tell us where the official route to synaptic tapping is? The only other way I can think to help you is to file a bug report but I know that few of us have the time. Before I gave up, I tried KDE4 to eliminate it being a hardware fault. On KDE it's easy: system Settings- keyboard and mouse Choose Touchpad-Tapping It survives a re-login and a re-boot. It uses synaptiks which I've never been able to run under xfce. With the new KDE4, xfce is not much quicker and I'm running it from a 16GB usb memory stick. If I had not found a solution on the Gentoo and Ubuntu forums, that's what I'd have opted for. But, there must be someone on the list who can help you with xfce. why not start a new thread: 'Anyone using openSUSE 11.3 with xfce'. Hi, just for info, I did try that method in Desktop Settings, it made my mouse so sensitive it was unusable. No setting in kde would fix it, and I ended up having to reinstall the operating system to get back to the point that I could use the touchpad mouse using gsynaptics to enable tapping. Maybe it was just something with that computer, but kde wasn't working for sure. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lynn, I tried your method on my Acer Aspire One (AOA 110), but did not have a xorg.conf to begin with. After creating one, it still didn't work. BUT ... a found on a Fedore bug site that gsynaptics is now depracated and we should be using gnome-mouse-properties which is also available in the control centre. Lo and behold ... there is a tab for the touchpad (openSUSE 11.2). Checking the tick box "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" is persistent after reboots. There are also a few other options in there. This has been a minor sore point for the last few months as everything else on this little lappy runs perfectly. Thank you for persisting with looking for the answer.
