[SLE] - Reverse of NAT (corrected version)
One of my friend just asked me this question, I would be interested to know if this can be done under SuSE? Qn: If one is to use SuSE as web server with 1 NIC, instead of having only 1 ip addr, is there a way to setup (via alias or otherwise) multiple virtual ip addrs with SuSE box? Ans: ??? Thanks. yes, called IP aliasing. there is a howto about it. looks like: ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.1.1 up ifconfig eth0:2 192.168.1.2 up brings up both 192.168.1.1 qand 192.168.1.2 on eth0 have fun..:) -- ======================================================================== Rocky McGaugh Atipa Linux Solutions Product Development www.atipa.com rocky@smluc.org rmcgaugh@atipa.com ======================================================================== -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Thanks Rocky, one more question.
Can I have more than two? or just two per NIC?
Thanks.

more than 2 yes. most i believe i've seen was like 60 on an interface. limit is 256 IP's on one card. if you need more than that, can try editing /usr/include/linux/net_alias.h have fun..:) -- ======================================================================== Rocky McGaugh Atipa Linux Solutions Product Development www.atipa.com rocky@smluc.org rmcgaugh@atipa.com ======================================================================== On Thu, 27 Apr 2000, Dennis wrote:

Thanks a lot, I will try it and let my friend know. This will make him awake for the night, I think. :-) Dennis/SG.

You can set up several IPs for one NIC. Simply call the alias devices that you add on top of eth0, fro example, eth0:0, eth0:1, eth0:2, etc. In Yast, that would be "Network Base Configuration"->New Device->"<Enter other device>"->"eth0:0" and configure this device like any other ethernet device. -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL+aerobatics) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Thanks Michael, I tried, it works.... setup 20 different IPs with one card, but only the response is a bit slower when ping from another PC. What a joy.. :-) But cannot see them in Win9x network neighbourhood? invisible?? Dennis/SG.

Samba only advertices the one main IP by default. I'm sure you can get it to do that for the other IPs as well, but I'm not sure why you'd want to do that, because that's redundant, unless you want to have different samba's listening each IP. I guess you have samba running??? -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL+aerobatics) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Yes Michael,
Samba is running. About the other question, just to see how far it can go
with a simple setup (for testing and knowledge only). In real life, of
course it's not practical to have a box setup in this manner.
Thanks again Michael.

Ans: ??? Yes, it is possible to have up to 256 ips' per card I believe.
To do this, you would do something along the lines of: ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.1.1 up ifconfig eth0:2 192.168.1.2 up ifconfig eth0:3 192.168.1.3 up ... If I am not mistaken, the first one is "eth0:0" The Purple Tiger wrote:

Yes Michael, the first one need to be eth0:0. Tried and working. Bye. Dennis.
