trouble configuring for web access
Hello all, I'm new to SUSE (used Mandrake to date), I've downloaded and installed 10.0 and really like what I've seen so far, but I'm having trouble setting up the network. I have set up a static IP 192.168.181.69 and set the default router address to 192.168.181.254, which is correct for our ADSL modem/router. I can ping any address on our network, and by entering the router address in a browser I can logon to it's administrative interface, but I cannot browse any pages. Any help appreciated, thanks, Aidan.

Hi, What about DNS? Did you specify any DNS at all? You can go to YaST under the start menu/System and check the network settings there or You can open a terminal window and try: host -t a www.google.com to see if it will resolve. The dns entries are stored in /etc/resolv.conf (you can check that file to see if they are correct). Check also your default gateway (netstat -rn). Also, try enabling DHCP for a moment. I'm pretty sure you're DSL modem will assign you the ip and the rest of required info. Once you know it works, you can then specify your configuration manually. Hope that helps, Jorge

Aidan, Sounds like a name resolution problem. Make sure you have put your ISPs DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf. Something like: nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (Your ISPs Nameserver unless you run your own) search yourlocaldomain.com Of course change "yourlocaldomain.com" to well, whatever you call your local domain. -- David C. David and Jorge, Thank you both very much for your replies. I'll be trying your suggestions as soon as possible. At the moment I'm booted in Mandriva doing a major MP3 ripping operation for my wife as her player arrives in the post tomorrow :) Will keep you posted.... Aidan.
