Re: Corel Wordperfect 2000 for Linux
Does anyone know where you can find a copy of Corel's Wordperfect Office 2000 for Linux? I've been using WP since the dos days. If I can get WP on my Linux box, I can discard my Microsoft 98 partition. If that's a no go, will WP Windows version work on Crossover Office? StarOffice just doesn't have the features I'm looking for. Thanks, Tom This message originated from a Unix computer using Open Source software: SuSE Linux 7.2 Pro, Galeon 1.0.3 Browser, AbiWord 0.99.3 Word Processor, Ximian Gnome 1.4.0.6 and Evolution 1.0.3 Groupware Suite. I bought my copy from Linux Central, http://www.linuxcentral.com. Don't know if they still sell it. I was very disapointed, though. . WP8 was. But WP2000 is all Win, on a special version of Wine. It's a trainwreck. Nobody wanted it to work more than me, but I just couldn't make it. Maybe your skills are better. Wanna buy mine for half-price? So for my old files I use WP in VMware and for new I'm trying to like KOffice or OpenOffice. On Friday, 12 April 2002 15:03, you wrote:

Well, Marco Boerries did make a StarWriter version for Windows back in 1993, a full year before it was available for OS/2. The StarOffice suite was introduced in 1995, and the aim was to make it available to all operating systems. I guess we were both wrong. - -- Alfredo J. I don't know from what storybooks you get your facts, but I can assure you that you are just plain wrong. Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux *IS NOT* a Motif program. If the looks don't convince ( you never have seen a Motif program look so "sleek" ) then you can do a find on the application tree, and search for "[w,W][i,I][n,N][e,E]", which should prove successful if I recall correctly. StarOffice was in version 5.1 available for both Windows and Linux. It is neither a wine application, nor a Motif application unless wine would be somehow hidden and linked into the binaries, which I wouldn't believe. StarOffice *USED* to be a Motif application back in the 3.x days while available for Linux AND other Unix OS's, but SUN didn't take it over until in early version 5.2, so they had nothing to do with the Windows port. - -- This mail is sent using KMail and Linux. Actually, the original writer was correct. WordPerfect 8 for Linux was done with Motif. WordPerfect 2000 for Linux was done with WINE. Not meaning to start a quid pro quo contest; just setting it straight. -Thomas Long tlong@eskimo.com -- Using SuSE Linux 7.3

Where can I get Corel WordPerfect or Corel Draw for Linux? Xandros has acquired rights to the Corel LINUX OS but unfortunately, we do not have the rights to develop or distribute WordPerfect or any of the Corel graphics applications. Corel has now discontinued distribution of their applications for Linux. Since WP2002 came out, I've seen WP2000 for Linux in the shops for just 40 euro or so. The Windows version seems to run very well on Win4Lin. SH

Dep is correct. SO started as an OS/2 program and it was written using SO developed libraries that made it easier for them to convert to different platforms. They had at least OS/2, Linux and Windows versions WAY before Sun purchased the company. I still remember rumors that IBM was buying SO so that they will have their own MS-Office like suite for OS/2. Could this be of interest to any interested in WPO2000? Running WordPerfect® Office 2000 for Linux® on Various Distributions Downloadable Script Now Available To install and run correctly, the original release of WordPerfect® Office 2000 for Linux® requires the presence of a system script called "run-parts". This is not present on some Linux distributions (including Caldera, SuSE, Mandrake and some others) which can prevent the application from running properly because an incorrect setup procedure is performed. Corel has quickly addressed this issue by creating a downloadable install script that does not require run-parts: Download the Updated Install Script http://linux.corel.com/support/script.htm dave Haralambos Geortgilakis wrote:

In case you are still interested in it, here is a link: http://shop.mensys.nl/catalogue/mns_WP2000L.html I've had it since it first came out. Used it quite a bit on my laptop. If you have lots of ram it will perform adequately. The good: It performs exactly as the windows version with all the bells and whistles. The bad: Startup times are a bit slow. If it crashes on you, it won't restart until you run a reset script that will regenerate the font metrics and such. Running that script solves any problems but also deletes all of your settings and customizations you've made since install. That alone irritated me to the point of giving up on it. If it was stable I would have loved it even if it did run on wine. The bottom line is that Corel bet its reputation on stable software released on top of alpha software. Not smart. If you buy it, you are on your own. Neither Corel or Xandros will support it. CHECK THAT! I just surfed to their site and I see the download and support pages were restored. When this topic was discussed a few months ago they had removed all the links to updated scripts and support. Perhaps someones lawyer reminded them they can't go back on the promised 30 day support. Alain Do you use WP2000? Since this thread began I reinstalled it. Works fine but can't print anything (I'm using cups). Just wondered if you were using it what was your experience with it. It has received much bad press on this list but except for the printing problem (which I didn't have before) I prefer it to anything that has been produced for Linux to date (that I have tried, anyway) and it works with MS docs fine! If you buy it, you are on your own. Neither Corel or Xandros will support it. CHECK THAT! I just surfed to their site and I see the download and support pages were
"Unfortunately, we cannot offer free support for existing users of Corel LINUX or Corel Linux applications. Please contact Corel Corporation for support of these products. " Taken from the xandros site at 1712 EDt 15 Apr 02 dave
restored. When this topic was discussed a few months ago they had removed all the links to updated scripts and support. Perhaps someones lawyer reminded them they can't go back on the promised 30 day support. It's a shame Corel botched the linux release so badly.

Thanks, Tom
