I have abandoned my quest to find a Linux equivalent to Outlook and now I am scratching around to find individual apps that will provide something similar to the functions of Outlook. I am considering using Kmail as an e-mail option. Can anyone tell me: a) Is it possible to completely close the auto-view (pain) pane? By close I mean disable it completely, not just minimize it out of sight. b) Is there any true message archive facility within Kmail? TIA Dave

Have you taken a look at Evolution 1.x? (Not the old early beta that is what unfortunately comes with 7.3 and earlier.)

I'm using KMail now, due to having reinstalled and not having the patience to download at 56kbps all of Evolution's needed libraries.

It can be certainly minimized, why do you want it disabled?

I'm not sure what you mean. You can save messages to folders, and messages you send out are automatically archived in the sent-mail folder.
Hi Joshua, Thanks for your reply.

I downloaded the basic Ximain Desktop for SuSE 7.3 which included Evolution 1.0.1

The reasons I want it be disabled (or at least the facility to switch it off): Partly an old Outlook habit, where I can see the message sender + subject and delete anything which looks suspect. OK this may not _currently_ be a problem in Linux e-mail apps, but it's a habit I am not going to change. Also I don't like the M$ style of instant viewing panes. More importantly is the fact that when I click on an unread message (regardless of the reason for selecting it) it instantly changes the highlighting / color to a read message (regardless of the viewer pane's visibility). Consequently, with hundreds of e-mails every day, I have to try and work out which messages I have actually read and those I just selected. This Kmail behaviour makes the highlighting / coloring of read & unread messages an exercise in ridiculous futility.

I haven't checked if Kmail physically stores the messages in the sent and inbox folders as individual files or in one collective file (eg. Outlook .pst file), but surely there must come a time when you want to clean up these folders. Agreed, you can just simply delete the messages from the folders, but how does Kmail archive and restore those messages that you want to keep (say on a fd or zip) for possible future reference. Archiving is such an incredibly trivial function to code for any application which uses any kind of database, I am surprised this function is still not a standard part of Kmail. It has to be trivial, because I have written 7 or 8 (DOS / Windows) applications which include this facility. Oh well, maybe Evolution 2 will enable me to finally dump Outlook. Dave

OK. I noticed in another message from you that you couldn't get it to send out. What was the content of any error messages? Did you get the smtp server right? If Evolution can use /usr/sbin/sendmail and you have a working sendmail setup (not a trivial task) have you tried that?

It'll never be a problem with KMail unless KMail suddenly starts supporting scripting in the email program the way Outlook supports VBScript as it's automatic virus transmitter. Also, even if you were to do something dumb and click on a suspicious attachment they can't do nearly the damage as they can under Windows unless you do it as root. The latter is the reason why there are few viruses for Linux.

You can right click on the message, go to select set status, and manually change the status to what you prefer. This is something that bugs me too, but it's not behavior unique to KMail unfortunately. (KMail is unusual in that it allows you to easily reset the status manually though.)

One collective file. This file is standard mbox format as far as I know, you can copy the folder to disk and copy it back with another name and KMail will recognize and use it. (It seemed to do this when I changed over from mutt due to problems with sendmail.)

Copy the folder to disk, then while KMail isn't running, copy it back with a non-conflicting new name. Start KMail, and it might recognize the new folder in the Mail directory. (See above.)
I am running suse7.2 with the plain vanilla kernel 2.4.16. I now wish to upgrade my kernel sources to SuSE kernel 2.4.16.22 however i do not have the bandwidth and have problems downloading the actual source file. I read sometime ago that you can download a patch to susesify the plain vanilla kernel. I searched through the suse website but could not find it. If anyone could tell me the location of such a patch I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance Harry A.

I'm sure there must be somebody out there with the answere as to the location of the patch?
Look in /pub/people/mantel Huber usually keeps a list of the patches he applies to kernels. It may not be .16 specific since he's working on .17 .. but it should be a start for you. * harry amarantidis (harry302@bcpl.net) [020218 14:54]: ->harry amarantidis wrote: ->> ->> I am running suse7.2 with the plain vanilla kernel 2.4.16. The patches can be found in the kernel src rpm. But with your bandwidth problem it doesn't help. But that the only place that I know of. But like Ben said you can get mantels patches for the dev kernel from mantels dir. -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com
