firefox 1.0.4 whants to remove many unrelated packages
Hi, I checked what will happen if I upgrade firefox to 1.0.4 (currently running 1.0.3). Strange, but apt-get wants to remove a bunch of unrelated (in my eyes) packages, like DVDRip and transcode ?!?!? Running SuSE 9.1 and apt-get, here is the output of the upgrade command: suse:/home/sunny # apt-get -s dist-upgrade Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Calculating Upgrade... Done The following packages will be upgraded MozillaFirefox libavc1394 libdvdnav libraw1394 mozilla The following packages will be REMOVED: Video-DVDRip libdc1394 libquicktime transcode The following packages have been kept back k3b kdemultimedia3-jukebox 5 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 removed and 2 not upgraded. try 'apt-get install MozillaFirefox' Is that going better? The Video-DVDRip libdc1394 libquicktime transcode packages are probably removed, due to the upgrade of 1 of the libavc1394 libdvdnav libraw1394 packages. Try to install 1 of them seperately, and see what happens: apt install libavc1394 etc -- Richard

Hmmm, firefox upgrade goes OK. I can not believe how I missed to try this. So, there is problem with synaptic then. Because when it displays what changes it is going to make, and I disabled there the removal of transcode, it popped up a window that it need to disable the upgrade of firefox as well, which led me to the conclusion that firefox is the problem. Strange. Ok, one way or another, the firefox upgrade is done, and I'll figure out how to deal with the other mess :) Thanks for putting me on the right track. Cheers Sunny
