Hi, I recompiled my kernal about 2 weeks ago and have been meaning to ask this: When it asks what chip I have, what whould I pick if I have a K6-II? I think I picked P5/Normal Pentium. Shoule I have picked PII? I hear that it doesn't really make a difference because the code isn't enhanced for the newer chips, is that right? Any/all Help is appreciated. James bond225@tiac.net

Are you using 2.2.x or 2.0.x? I thought under 2.2.x there was a K6 option (or there was an option that listed a bunch of CPU's and K6 was one of them.) Anyway, it does make a difference. I have a cyrix 6x86 150 I thought I could use the pentium kernel with it (2.2.9) but the pentium kernel doesn't work with cyrix 6x86's! Anyway, if you don't see an option for K6 just use what works. Maybe try putting a kernel for p2 on a floppy and see if it will boot :) If you don't use that kernel all the time it will at least be interesting to see what happens. later, Matt.

I'm using 2.2.5(?) the standard one that came wwith 6.1. I haven't bothered to get a new modem yet. (i had to pull the :bleh: winmodem out of my DX4/100). When I get a new one, I plan on upgrading the kernal, KDE, etc.

I have a k6-3 400 and there is an option for it .. just use 'make xconfig' and you shall see it. Once this is done it runs increadibly fast, I would never buy Intel again. I love my AMD and I loved the price more. I have an ASUS MB w/ a meg of L2 cache + the 320 L1 cache in the chip, so it just smokes..way better then the PII I had... ;) laters, -- *************************************************** Ben Rosenberg mailto:dragula@primary.net *************************************************** 'Powered by "This message was sent from a Unix box, SuSE Linux' through a Unix box to your inbox ;)" ***************************************************

Yeah, I love AMD, too. I have an Aopen MB with 1 meg of cache as well, it screems even windoze! that was quite a shock for me ;) James bond225@tiac.net

At work someone ordered a cyrix 233 mII for use in my work computer. He said something about it being like a p2. When I got it I felt let down. It looked more like a pentium then a p2. Then I plugged it in. It could run mathcad docs over twice as quickly as the pentium mmx that I was running (and they both were at the same clock speed.) I liked it so much I got cyrix chips to use at home. The MII can't push flops as fast as a k6 or a celery but boy does it fly when it is doing integer calculations! In fact I believe it can do integer calculations faster than any chip out there (for the same clock speed.) And when you compile support for the 686 into the kernel, the speed really picks up! To bad cyrix is not doing so well lately. Unless cyrix can pull things out (they were just bought out by another company,) my next chip is going to be a k7 -- and I am not getting an intel chip ever again either! What is the main difference between a Pent pro, p2, p3 and p2-p3 celeron? Answer: several hundred dollars! I notice cyrix chips are at bargin basement prices right now. If you need a chip I suggest giving one a try! Later, Matt.

Yeah, I'm getting an MII for a box I'm building. I bought the MB for $5! Of course I bought the 1megL2 cache MB for my k6-II at the same yard sale for $10. hehehe. I *do* have to find two Pentium Pros (anybody on the list know where I can them?) Because I bought a dual Ppro motherboard with on board SCSI and onboard EIDE/UDMA33. it's pretty sweet. Speaking of which: How does SuSE run with dual-processors? As good as other Linuxes? James bond225@tiac.net (struggling to attempt to keep this OT) :)
Later,
Matt.
The forcast is that there will be a price premium for the k7. So it will cost a lot more , and be near the the cost for the "equivalent" intelchip. Plans are that the K6 III will then me karked down to the bargin basmenbt bin replacing the K6-II. I have two K6-II based systems , and plan on staying with amd. they even have Mobile versions of the k6-II. So they are realy making in roads. If only they can get ther production woes fixed and start making some money , aS to ensure a viable option ti the intel/mickysoft bear. I notice cyrix chips are at bargin basement prices right now. If
you need a chip I suggest giving one a try!
