cd ripping and encoding under 8.1 pro
Hi, all -- I would like to get back to my cd conversion project, in which I am converting all of my CDs to MP3s (OGG under consideration; both performance and portability stories welcome), but I'm having trouble finding anything to use for the ripping and encoding! I have a stock SuSE 8.1 install with KDE 3.1.3 added on. Surely someone else out there must be ripping and encoding... What are you using? How did you install it all, and from where? from xterm or konsole, enter the command 'abcde' (make sure abcde is installed - it's not, by default) this neat script does it all in one go, creating a directory for your cd tracks, getting the cddb data, ripping, and conversion to ogg. *Much* easier and simpler than *any* graphical utility I've seen Tony

Surely someone else out there must be ripping and encoding... What are you using?
I use grip in conjunction with cdparanoia for ripping, oggencgt3b1 (Oggenc Garf tuned 3 beta 1) for vorbis and lame for mp3. The switches I use for vorbis is: -o %m -a %a -l %d -t %n -q 6 %w and for lame: -preset standard %w %m
How did you install it all, and from where?
I compiled them from source, but other than lame and oggencgt3b1, they are included with SuSE. SuSE can't include lame due to legal reasons. If you want to compile from source you can find the software at: Grip: http://www.nostatic.org/grip/ cdparanoia: http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/ lame: http://lame.sourceforge.net/ Ogg Vorbis: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/ oggencgt3b1 (this one is prebuild): http://users.pandora.be/sjeng/ftp/vorbis/OggEncGT3b1.Linux.x86 Charles -- linux: the choice of a GNU generation (ksh@cis.ufl.edu put this on Tshirts in '93)

You don't have to- you can go to packman like other people have suggested. I just prefer compiling them myself. I made a small mistake here. it should be: --preset instead of -preset Also, if you are going to use an older version of lame, the switches should be: --alt-preset standard %w %m Charles -- "The IETF motto is 'rough consensus and running code'" -- Scott Bradner (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

I use konqueror, goto 'audiocd:/' and your tracks are in the folders, copy them to your harddisk and done, settings are in the kde controll center under "sound->audioslave" . Dear David, Try GRIP. It is on the SuSE 8.2 Cds. I think it is the best of all I have tried. It uses both of my CPUs to encode (MP3 & OGG) and taps directly into the Freecddb for title and track info. PeterB On Monday 25 August 2003 04:59 pm, dries wrote:

That can be a problem when using the 'konqueror audiocd:/' trick as well, to get MP3's of the cd i needed to install liblame first (was relatively easy though). By the way, i got the " An error occured while loading audiocd:/: The file or directory / does not exist. " error if there was no disk in the drive, maybe konqueror is searching for an audio cd in the wrong drive, this can be changed with the control center audioslave settings. I'm sure this has been covered before, but please indulge me. SUSE 8.2 has a number of video players (kplayer, xine) but for some copyright reason dvd playback is disabled in all these packages. If I want to play DVDs, what's my best option. Download a package from scratch or patch something like xine? If the former, what's the best package. If the latter, what file am I looking for? I've searched the net to some extent, without a lot of success, and since I'm suffering from a very slow dial up connection, downloading and trial by error is not really an option. My experience is that Mplayer is the best choice in terms of flexibility, reliability, and ease of use. Get it at http://www.mplayerhq.hu Once you've built Mplayer from sources, kmplayer works nicely on almost all media. Ogle is another option to consider: http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/ Pretty straightforward and if you want to use RPMs, the Redhat ones work fine with SuSE. http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/redhat.shtml HTH Jon

Thanks for your help. I use Xine that I douwnloaded and compiled from their source at their homepage. It works great for DVD's and I haven't had any trouble with it. My opinion is download from scratch and dont mess with the crippled SuSE versions. Good Luck.

OGG under consideration; both performance and portability stories welcome...
I personal find Ogg Vorbis sound better and more transparent than mp3 at around the same bitrate (for example, lame --preset standard and oggenc -q6). The vorbis file size is also slightly smaller and much faster to encode. I only use mp3 on my portable CD player. If you decide to use oggvorbis at -q6, I suggest you use oggencgt3b1. This version is tuned for high bitrates. For low bitrate files (< q5), use the regular oggenc. Garf's high bitrate tuning will be included in the upcoming 1.01 maintainiance release. After that, there will be massive low bitrate tuning. Charles -- "If you want to travel around the world and be invited to speak at a lot of different places, just write a Unix operating system."
