[opensuse] OpenOffice.org Fast Launch?
Some time ago, I remember seeing a discussion about a way to speed up the launch of OpenOffice.org modules. Now I can't find any reference to it. I can find references to 'quick launch' but that refers to putting icons on the quicklaunch panel. Does anyone else remember such a discussion or am I just going nuts in my old age? Thanks for any assistance. Don Henson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

"quicklaunch" is the way to speed up launching OO. It not only provides an icon in the sys tray but that icon is used to launch OO faster because it keeps the core part of OO in memory, IIANM. IIRC, there's a separate RPM that has to be installed for the Quickstarter. On my system, the first time starting OpenOffice after a reboot takes less than 3 seconds, after that, less than 2s. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can also go to Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Memory, and reduce the settings there... for example: Undo - 30 Use for OpenOffice.org - 128MB Memory per object - 20.0 Number of objects - 20 Adapt to your own needs... If you don't need to use the wizards, you can also disable Java. Small changes... but they can make a significant difference. If you poke around on the various forums and blog entries on OOo you will likely find some discussion about this, and the various combinations of settings that people find work well. And as a matter of principle, I never install the Quickstarter. Although I am using 2 GB of RAM, I definitely see no benefit in sacrifising memory for something that I might _poosibly_ need to start during the day. And when I start OOorg it admittedly takes a little longer, but the time it takes then, is much less than the time I need to read this mail. kind regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You're not sacrificing memory. Should you fill that 2 GB, the least recently used stuff will be sent to swap. Linux does not have all the issues that Windows does and works far more efficiently. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have only 1G of RAM and very seldom ever swap anything. The last time I can recall worrying about the amount of ram used by dormant program bits and pieces was programming array manipulations on my HP-28S with 32K of memory. I don't know how much oo quicklaunch takes, but I have not been affected by its absence. YMMV -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. OK, it does not do any harm, instead it has some positive effect.. Nevertheless please allow me to rephrase: No matter how much RAM it takes or how much RAM I will (not) have, I never preload anything, just on the basis that I might possibly use it some time later on. When I fire up OOorg it loads rather slow in comparison to the load time of e.g. konsole or kcalc or... On the other hand, I am unable to see any notable decrease of my office productivity by loading OOorg "from cold" just when I need it, not earlier, not later. In general it might be a good long term idea, to design OpenOffice similar to the MDI Design of it's MS counterpart. This would save on "dirty tricks" that solely exist to convey the illusion or impression of starting just a little quicker. ;-)) Kind regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, one could claim you're wasting RAM when it could be holding something, instead of empty. ;-) -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just note that the OpenOffice_org-Quickstarter package is only for KDE. A similar quickstarter for GNOME is bundled inside OOo. You might enable it in "Tools/Options.../OpenOffice.org/Memory/Enable systray Quickstarter". -- Best Regards, Petr Mladek software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: pmladek@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 952 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
