Someone asked me to install Skype ( VOIP Telephony program ) and I did. I am running SUSE 9.2 and have a Dell Dimension 4400 box. The audio card shows up as a Dell 82801 BA/BAM AC' 97 card. I can't seem to get the audio working, and I noticed on the skype forum site that many people had problems with audio, and a lot of those were DELL boxes.. does anyone have Skype working on a Dell desktop box?? -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

What desktop do you use? Is audio working for you for other purposes (can you talk into a mic and hear it back over the speakers). It seems necesarry to execute skype with (artsd -m skype (for kde) or with esd skype (for gnome)). In case of kde it is possible to put the mic in recording mode with (kamix I think), does it help if you switch on the recording mode for the mic? I tried skype on suse-9.2, but I was not able to setup a connection. I could hear the other, but I was not able to get my sound to the other party. Very disappointing.... Hope this helps (btw it was not a Dell). -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I use skype all the time, 9.2 x86 and 9.2 x86_64. Check mixer settings, the mic should have both the red and green lights on for kmix, The IEC958 switches should be off, play with different switches and try the skype testing service echo123. Pete and Sid, what desktop (kde, gnome, other, all)? How do you start skype (artsdsp -m skype, esddsp skype, just skype)?? Can you provide more information about the skype testing service? I did not find to much information about it.... Have you seen that the api has be made available: http://www.skype.com/company/news/2004/apibeta.html -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Just type skype. You can have a desktop icon by putting this in /home/<user>/Desktop/skype.desktop, one of the installs did it for me. [Desktop Entry] Categories=Network;Application; Comment=Skype Comment[en_US]=Skype Encoding=UTF-8 Exec=skype GenericName= GenericName[en_US]= Icon=skype.png MimeType= Name=Skype Path= StartupNotify=true Terminal=false TerminalOptions= Type=Application X-DCOP-ServiceType= X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false X-KDE-Username=

Interesting to see what other features developers will come up with. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====
