Hi All, I'm sure this problem will be an easy one for you guys an gals out there. I have a friend who would like to change his email MTA server from a Windows based solution to a Linux with Anti-virus and Antu-Spam.. I said that I think Postfix could do the job for him, but I'm new to Linux so I'm no too sure. His ISP does all the work for him.. They push the email's down via SMTP to his windows PC that runs some sort of SMTP software which in turn forwards the email's to an MS Exchange server. My question is, first of all can Postfix do this or is there another package out there that can do it.. If so could you point me in the right direction.. Thanks in advance for your help. Martin

Postfix is just an MTA, so it needs help from amavis, clamAV and SpamAssassin to do all the work you require. The docs on www.postfix.org are pretty good; the third-party docs linked there focus less on the Postfix internals and more on how to set up systems. I am sure your friend will find a few different options that will suit his/her needs.

This setup doesn't make sense to me, but that's not really important right now. To run a mailserver that has an MX record in public DNS with the least amount of hassles, your friend should have a fixed public IP address he can use for his Postfix server. Where he chooses to send the email after Postfix gets it is up to him. Just remember that Postifx is ONLY and MTA. It doesn't store emails; it just accepts them, processes them, and then sends them on to wherever they are supposed to go. If your friend wants to set up a mailserver that works like Exchange with OWA, then you will need to add something like Cyrus (an IMAP/POP server) and a webmail front-end like SquirrelMail or Horde.
