[opensuse] Repo for Freetype with BCI/sub-pixel hinting enabled
Hi, I'm thinking of trying out 10.2, but was wondering if there's a repository that includes a freetype package with the bytecode interpreter and sub-pixel hinting already enabled. There is a very good page on this in opensuse-community.org: http://opensuse-community.org/SubpixelHinting This is a very easy step-by-step. -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - KDE yn Gymraeg www.klebran.org.uk - Gwirydd gramadeg rhydd i'r Gymraeg www.eurfa.org.uk - Geiriadur rhydd i'r Gymraeg www.rhedadur.org.uk - Rhedeg berfau Cymraeg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Indeed. Which sort of begs the question, why isn't it in packman together with the other patent-busting necessities? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Because I've put it in my repository and not in Packman.
And also because Packman and my repository are mirrored at several
places, amongst which also in the US. Without the green light of a
lawyer, I wouldn't host binary RPMs with subpixel hinting enabled.
But it's not too difficult to build it yourself from the src.rpm, so,
you may chose to do so ;)
cheers

That's true m8. wget http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/suser-guru/rpm/experimental/packages/freetype2/src/... TARGET_OPT=`case $(uname -m) in i*86) echo --target=i586;; esac` rpmbuild --rebuild $TARGET_OPT --with subpixel freetype2-*.guru.suse*.src.rpm However IMO it's still looks like crap. I've even disabled it on my Windows coz I couldn't get sleep nights after a few hours of work with subpixel hinting enabled. But who needs it, just build it. I like sharp lookin' fonts. I wonder, if we could package a little script like
wget http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/suser-guru/rpm/experimental/packages/freetype2/src/...
TARGET_OPT=`case $(uname -m) in i*86) echo --target=i586;; esac`
rpmbuild --rebuild $TARGET_OPT --with subpixel freetype2-*.guru.suse*.src.rpm
* including a desktop icon to trigger the script ending in rpm -Uhv freetype... and call it freetype-rebuild-subpixel.rpm or something. :-) cheers, Jw. -- o \ Juergen Weigert paint it green! __/ _=======.=======_ <V> | jw@suse.de wide open suse_/ _---|____________\/ \ | 0911 74053-508 (tm)__/ (____/ /\ (/) | __________________________/ _/ \_ vim:set sw=2 wm=8 SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) "Oral agreements are worth about as much as the paper they are written on." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sure, would be pretty easy. And package the script as an RPM to pull in required dependencies (gcc, make, glibc-devel, ...). [...]

Yes, RPMs should be built as non-root anyway. And at the end of the script, kdesu or gnomesu to root to do the rpm - --freshen line.
and call it freetype-rebuild-subpixel.rpm or something. :-)
;)
cheers

The trick, I've found, is to install the fontconfig files originally developed for PC-BSD; razor sharp-looking MS core fonts and the level/variety of hinting set out in your desktop environment's control panel for the rest. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

_\_v The more things change, the more they stay insane.
When it comes to font technology, I think there's a lot to be said for bringing in Shuttleworth's lawyers ;) Cheers, Michael -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

/snip/ I looked at this, but it says you must have 10.2 or there'll be trouble. (Sigh.) But it is by far the best step-by-step thing I've ever seen for anything Linux. To whoever wrote it, my congratulations!

Well, here's the deal: it worked without a hitch on my 10.0 laptop,
so... You give it a try, lemme know how it works out (as said, _should_
work) and if it's fine I'll update the wiki page to remove that
limitation line ;)
cheers
