[SLE] Ultra DMA/100 (PCI ATA 100) is suported in SuSE linux ?
Hi all, I have an ASUS A7V motherboard, that comes with an onboard PCI Bus Master IDE controller with two connectors that support four ATA100 devices. UltraDMA/100, UltraDMA/66, UltraDMA/33, PIO Modes 3&4 are supported. Promise PCI-ATA100 Support: Provides optional support to PCI-ATA100 controller to provide Ultra DMA/100 solutions. HDD is an Seagate Barracuda ATA-II. The problem: =========== I can't use my HDD via ATA port. If I connect the hard disk into IDE, all is ok, but speed ... . There is any possibility to use ATA connector and to use SuSE 7.0 ? In Windows there are available drivers but ... I hate Bill Gate. I tried to use Ultra66 driver but I'm not so experienced in such devices. Can somebody help me ? The kernel which I use is 2.2.16 but I tried 2.2.14 too. My setup would be: * Promise PCI ATA 100 controller with 2 x IBM 20 GIG ATA 100 drives attached to the primary IDE on the controller card. * HP 8200i CD-Writer & Creative 52x CD-ROM on TYAN Mobo's primary IDE (ATA66/33) In fact, the number of queries about ATA 100 support is beginning to worry me more than slightly as I'm just about to install Linux (SuSE 7), for the very first time ever, on a new PC I've just built especially for the purpose. By the reports so far, or lack of them, I could be in for a complete brain banging headache before I even get to step 1! Some definitive help here would be much appreciated, bearing in mind also that Linux is totally new to me - not that I'm daft, just unfamiliar with it, and yes I am rtfm, all 600 pages of it ;) -- Thanks SImon http://www.netbanger.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Hi, My previous setup had a Highpoint 366 ATA 66 add on card which SuSE 6.4 detected and configured with no problem. I have now updated to an ABIT KT7 Raid motherboard which has 2 extra IDE channels configured for ATA 100. I have an 8 G ATA 33 drive as hda, 20 G ATA 66 as hdb and, on the addition channels, hde, another 20 g drive but at ATA 100. I did a fresh install of SuSE 7.0 using hdb for all things Linux and hda and hde as windows drives. The Highpoint 370 ATA 100 controller was picked by the install. All drives are available to my Linux setup. The only thing I cannot do is measure the drive performance. I hope this helps. Stu Does anyone know of a tool for measuring HD performance in the SuSE setup? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

I was beginning to get in a real spin ;) I'd read the SuSE 7 promo page at http://www.suse.com/us/products/susesoft/70news/new_in_70.html and obviously imagined that the Promise Ultra100 or the IBM ATA 100 40GV drives would not be a problem for SuSE 7! Here is a quote: "...XFree86TM 4.0 also features support for scanners on parallel ports, Adaptec RAID controllers, Symbios Logic sym53c1010 SCSI U160 controllers, and EIDE ATA/100 controllers." Quite clear, but recent posts and feedback kind of contradicted it :/ Also found this 3 month old article at http://slashdot.org/articles/00/06/06/2352203.shtml doing a search with Google today; quote from Slashdot: "..."Linux now supports Ultra ATA/100 HDDs, initially funded by SuSE Linux. Get the driver from: [www.linux-ide.org]." As you either know or have probably guessed, ATA/100 is the successor to the ATA/66 hard drive interface standard. And as the linux-ide.org site puts it..." Again, leading me to believe that it did. So it looks like I should just go ahead and see what happens (could not find the driver at www.linux-ide.org though). -- Thanks SImon http://www.netbanger.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Does this mean that my parallel port scanner, that up to now has only worked with windows, will be able to work with Linux? If the anwser is "maybe" how can I tell if my scanner is now one of the supported ones? TIA!
