Increase the power? Just kidding, what youare saying is that at bootime or shutdown the system is slow going through the runlevels? Some resource or device is hanging the order. Have you taken a look at the logs? Humm, I am suspecting a drive problem or might it be the DMA SuSE script. Are you enabling that script? I do not use 7.3, but I do use this on SLES, which is based on 7.2. Since you mentioned the power issues, it might be, some type of HW problem. All these errors make that seem more likely. So, first check on whether you have that DMA switch, then try it without. If not, I would suspect the drive. I have one right now that is not dead, but takes forever seeking over some sectors, you may have a similar problem. Good news is that most HD manufacturers have ridiculously long warranty, like 5 years in the case of IBM. These are so long that that drives of 4 years ago are not produced or in-stock, so often you get a new drive with RMA. So, returning drives is a pain, but all of the ones I have dealt with (IBM, Maxtor, Quantum) have sent me back units in due time. You just have to go through all their proceedures :~) BTW, what is the drive attached to, MB I mean, is it ASUS ATA100 with Promise for example? Looks like there's been a rash of this DMA cruft going around. Speculation at this point, most of the kernels that are made by Hubert are sound, common source with the patches from Andrea and the other branches IA-64 Zseries etc). Anything for the IDE I suspect would be fom Andre Hedrick, and his code is usually sound, well he is the ATA guy :~) So, my issues with IDE drives are bad HW, not SW. I, erm, disagree, but you don't know him like I know him. :)

Indeed. It's much more likely that it's a hardware issue, but this bears watching. -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed! This is the third or forth report which includes dma_intr errors. I really doubt that everyone's hardware is failing at the same time. My questions is wether everyone who are getting these errors are running the same kernel. I get these errors on boot up and I am running the 2.4.16-4GB kernel. Anyone else? 12/28/01 02:41:38 AM, "Jon" <marsaro@interearth.com> wrote:

I have been getting the same DMA_INT errors starting with 7.2 (with the stock SuSE 7.2 kernel.. whatever that was) and again with 7.3 on the 2.4.10-4GB kernel. Specifically... ----------------------------- Dec 28 18:40:18 linux kernel: hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Dec 28 18:40:18 linux kernel: hdb: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } ----------------------------- This is not a unique problem. If you do a Google search with either of the errors, you will come up with lots of hits.. and lots of suggestions. The general agreement is hardware issues... although, I have to agree... I can't imagine that everyone's hardware is all failing at the same time... all over the world. Hmm that's one for the conspiracy theorists ;-) I replaced the ribbon cables and that reduced the number of these errors in my log files, but did not eliminate them. I noted some postings suggesting that having a CDROM slaved to a HD may cause some of these errors. C.

I had the hard drive - cdrw slave configuration and changed it to hard drive - hard drive. This cut down the number of errors but did not stop it. As a note, I only get these errors on initial boot (apparently before it even gets into any run levels), and then never get any errors or have any problems after that. I hate to have to get in on this one. I am NOT asking for help, I am only trying to possibly help others figure out what is going on with this problem. You can add me to the list of dma troubles / problems. I noticed this problem after adding a new 40G harddrive, to a system that had an existing 20G and 8.4G drive. Don't get pissed off... I jump around when I am talking. I don't write documentation for a living, I don't care to. The story goes like this... Around about midnight.... (Cron Script for suse harden maybe?) A click sound occurs (kinda sounds like the drive is going to sleep mode), problem is I run my drives 24/7/365 (this box since 1998) so I don't want sleep mode, and then cpu memory everything goes to 100% and suse is locked up and there a ton of kernel errors, Inode errors, access errors, seek errors, etc. Kinda like the drive is starting to totally fail. Some of the highlights of this fun were: drive not ready for command status timeout status=0xff (busy) end request I/O error, dev 16:0c (hdc), sector XXXXXXX timeout waiting for DMA ide1 reset success ide_dmaproc chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 14 irq timeout status=0x50 DriveReady SeekComplete DMA disabled read_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } read_intr: error=0x04 ( DriveStatusError } lost interrupt last message repeated 4 times spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7 I think that last one was me messin with the cd/burner.. anyway... If you got something similar in your logs I assume we have the same problem. Sometimes just waiting will end the errors; and control can be regained, usually I am not that patient, and I hit the power switch, e2fsck, and go back up. I have quite a lot of log files regarding this problem(I tar cf'd all of my logs up), basically too much to waste time posting here. All I can say is something is really funky since all my equipment is new enough that you can't just say it is the HW. So let's not put blame anywhere until there are some facts. Fact: It didn't start happening until I added a new drive. Suse was perfectly happy running 24/7/365 (ON THE SAME DRIVE) I followed the discussion on this list and tried everything that was being discussed. Over the course of a week(it took me a little longer actually) I backed up everything I had. Go buy 50 CD's for 30-40 bucks...My databases are up and humming ;o) (glad I did I know someone else who recently lost all their settings--bummer, all I can say is patience with your box next time.) Yesterday I finally decided I had backed up enough of my settings, data, passwords etc, I had planned my new partitions well enough, and so I completely formated the drive using mandrake 8.0, creating /dev/hdc13 15G 7.7G 6.2G 56% / /dev/hdc11 39M 2.4M 34M 7% /boot /dev/hdc8 2.0G 61M 1.7G 4% /home /dev/hdc7 484M 403M 56M 88% /mp3 /dev/hdc10 58M 13k 54M 1% /mystic /dev/hdc6 242M 1.7M 227M 1% /root /dev/hdc9 242M 2.5M 226M 2% /tmp /dev/hdc12 242M 12M 217M 6% /usr/local/httpd shmfs 717M 0 717M 0% /dev/shm I then setup everything (basically all packages cept a few daemons I don't want running) The setup went perfectly smooth. Not one error did I see. Then I logged on, and got this in the Xconsole kernel: hdc: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } kernel: hdc: dma_intr: status=0x85 ( DriveStatusError BadCRC AddrMarkNotFound }, LBAsect=16717423, sector=448216 SO I quit, and reboot. upon reboot It ran e2fsck and corrected a few things (without me having to manually run e2fsck) and booted back up, logged back in, no more errors in the Xconsole. I been updating, patching, etc. Just past that dreaded 12:00 midnight cron thingy and so far it seems quiet and behaving. It's 4:58am now. Prior to the fdisk format reinstall doo-dah doo-dah. I had "fdisk -l" show this: Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 4866 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 1102 8851783+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hda2 1103 4866 30234330 f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hda5 1103 2367 10161081 b Win95 FAT32 /dev/hda6 2368 3671 10474348+ b Win95 FAT32 /dev/hda7 3672 4866 9598806 b Win95 FAT32 Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 38792 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdc1 * 1 4160 2096451 e Win95 FAT16 (LBA) Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary: phys=(1023, 10, 63) should be (1023, 15, 63) /dev/hdc2 4160 38656 17386141+ 5 Extended /dev/hdc3 38657 38792 68544 83 Linux /dev/hdc5 4160 8320 2096451 6 FAT16 /dev/hdc6 8320 12480 2096451 6 FAT16 /dev/hdc7 12480 16639 2096451 6 FAT16 /dev/hdc8 16639 20799 2096451 6 FAT16 /dev/hdc9 37438 38656 614250 82 Linux swap /dev/hdc10 20800 22220 716152+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc11 22221 22727 255496+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc12 22728 37437 7413808+ 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order Now After I have rebuilt the system I show this: Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 4866 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 1102 8851783+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hda2 1103 4866 30234330 f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hda5 1103 2367 10161081 b Win95 FAT32 /dev/hda6 2368 3671 10474348+ b Win95 FAT32 /dev/hda7 3672 4866 9598806 b Win95 FAT32 Disk /dev/hdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1021 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdb1 * 1 1021 8201151 b Win95 FAT32 Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 38792 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdc1 * 1 38792 19551136+ 5 Extended /dev/hdc5 1 1040 524097 82 Linux swap /dev/hdc6 1041 1547 255496+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc7 1548 2562 511528+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc8 2563 6692 2081488+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc9 6693 7199 255496+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc10 7200 7320 60952+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc11 7321 7401 40792+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc12 7402 7908 255496+ 83 Linux /dev/hdc13 7909 38792 15565504+ 83 Linux The only thing I see from this is that little didy above that says something about partition 1 not ending on a cylinder boundary. And as you can see it must be on that boundary now. Or it would show it ain't. So MAYBE it's got something to do with these dma problems. Another thing, BIOS settings, My bios had to be flashed. An ASUS P5A-B board I got the update to 1010. I heard others with problems on the A7V boards, so I know I am not just Imagining this problem. The weird thing is each problem that others had was just slightly different than mine. I also tried that hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc (in conjunction with bios and with bios off -- both ways) and with the system tuning idedma turned on / off, and the problem remained. Like I said so far so good with the total reinstall though. A side note, mandrake's disk drake sure is a neat tool, I don't run mandrake anymore, but suse could learn from that neat little graphic tool. It's nice and it lays out your disks neatly and you have a lot less confusion when problems like this happen. I plan to keep these mandrake disks around just for that reason for now on. Even if I have a new suse install, I would use mandrake to start the partitions. When I first Bought suse... I made a bad mistake of not having a seperate /tmp directory. (it took >12 hours to install before I noticed, I decided not to reinstall) This little mistake caused / to fill up on about 4-5 occasions last year. It wasn't the end of the world but it was a pain to track down where the files were and delete em. Typing in a ton of numbers may be fine for some, but I think it's B.S. and when you can actually see graphically what effect you are having on your partition tables it's a lot less disconcerting. It also would have avoided the mistake of not having a /tmp I am still learning. It's okay I am much more happy with these sizes: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hdc13 15G 7.7G 6.2G 56% / /dev/hdc11 39M 2.4M 34M 7% /boot /dev/hdc8 2.0G 61M 1.7G 4% /home /dev/hdc7 484M 403M 56M 88% /mp3 /dev/hdc10 58M 13k 54M 1% /mystic /dev/hdc6 242M 1.7M 227M 1% /root /dev/hdc9 242M 2.5M 226M 2% /tmp /dev/hdc12 242M 12M 217M 6% /usr/local/httpd shmfs 714M 0 714M 0% /dev/shm /dev/hda1 8.4G 3.3G 5.1G 39% /windows/C /dev/hda5 9.7G 5.5G 4.1G 57% /windows/D /dev/hda6 10G 376k 9.9G 1% /windows/E /dev/hda7 9.1G 16k 9.1G 1% /windows/F /dev/hdb1 7.8G 336k 7.8G 1% /windows/G (I ran a bbs since 1994 and I only lost data one time and that was because of popping a partion to make room for OS/2, I was able to recover most of the important data, Not the system though) Popping partitions is a dangerous game. A stupid ANSI graphic make life a lot easier So, your probably sayin what an idiot I am for writing all this, well A couple more tips first. It seemed that turning off the ide dma=disable in bios gave some relief, but still of the course of watching for three days, It never seem to fail to start having problems around between 12:00 midnight and 3am (that's when all my scripts run.) I had initially thought I fixed the problem, but I didn't actually notice that it wasn't fixed until the third night. I have not ran harden_suse again yet. I am frankly scared to. I want to watch everything for 7 more days. (setting up suse takes quite awhile, and I don't want to waste my work just yet.) I will get bold and run harden suse some time next week. Another weird thing is sometimes on reboot, I notice Updating ESCD and then no more lilo. Shutting off power for 15 min seem to clear this. I know I know that totally don't make no sense either. I replaced the ribbons to all drives etc.. So.. anyway. All those problems seem to be gone now. I hope some of this will help ya all. So far so good here now. regards. phil

Humm, I am suspecting a drive problem or might it be the DMA SuSE script. Are you enabling that script? I do not use 7.3, but I do use this on SLES, which is based on 7.2.
Ok. No I do not enable that script. Not AFAIK. How can I see that ?.
I have the same problem. Its a new Seagate 40GB.
You just have to go through all their proceedures :~)
Yes no problems in warranty. What if I install again from schratch, and it then works ok, can I then trust the HDD is ok ?.
BTW, what is the drive attached to, MB I mean, is it ASUS ATA100 with Promise for example?
Its a Soltek 75KV and I suppose ATA100 or ATA66. Not sure
