[opensuse] DKMS (and nVidia drivers)?
I recently discovered the appeal of DKMS with VirtualBox (I installed DKMS when I was playing with the VBox 4 Betas). After installing a new kernel over the weekend, DKMS took care of updating the VirtualBox kernel modules. It did add some time to the initial reboot after the kernel update, but the result was that one of the apps that usually "breaks" after a kernel update worked without any additional intervention from me. I was rather surprised. So... this got me to thinking... if this works so nicely with VirtualBox, why can't it be applied to the nVidia drivers... or better yet, how can it be applied. A little digging turned up: https://features.opensuse.org/308323 and http://forums.opensuse.org/english/community/soapbox/432040-when-will-opensu... but no real answer. Has anyone taken this any further? Anyone managed to use DKMS to auto-rebuild the nVidia kernel modules after a kernel update? Is this a hook we can use, or is it something that has to be done on the nVidia side by nVidia? Or.. is this question better suited for the Factory list? (I posted here because I have a feeling a lot here don't know of DKMS... and how "nice" it is... sure there might be issues with using it but... they can't be sorted out of it's not generally available/in use) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I had the opposite experience on 11.2 x86_64. I installed dkms and then kernel-default-2.6.37-33.1.x86_64 and could not open any of my VBox appliances. I solved it by rpm -e dkms, and then vboxdrv setup.

but this *would* be nice, providing I can utilize dkms... -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't have DKMS installed and I can see that VirtualBox tried to use it, so it seems that is up to nvidia and ati guys to include DKMS in their scripts.. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
