[opensuse] Sound not working

I am running the 64 bit version of OpenSuSE 10.1. The laptop has the following specs: Blade-K8F GW UMA Motherboard w/ R5485M and 1394. ATI RS485m chipset (Gateway says it is Radeon Xpress 1150) SigmaTel 9250 Sound SI3080 modem Broadcom 4311E wireless G GemTek WMIB-184GW ethernet
Now the boring part is done this is my problem. The wireless just does not work. I will work with that latter since I have a netgear PCMCIA card that is working.
Install 10.2 when it comes out (the kernel supports this chipset) and locate the package called bcm43xx-fwcutter-005-13 to install the firmware. Use it with the windows drivers that came with the laptop. I use it with the Linksys PCMCIA card and it works great.

I still do not have sound. We actually have some progress after the fresh install to 10.2 but there is no sound. It shows up within YAST as an ATI Multimedia device just as 10.1 did. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Dan, I don't know if it'll help, but I'll share my personal collection of SUSE Linux sound 'forensics/repair' notes: a) try, as root in a shell, deleting the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound and running alsaconf b) for a sound card with a broken config or won't configure at all: as root: rpm -e --nodeps kdemultimedia3-mixer (removing just the mixer) ldconfig rcalsasound stop rm /etc/asound.state rcalsasound start alsactl store then run: alsaconf Note: After you have your sound settings right, open up another terminal, su to root and type: alsactl store ... (read man alsactl for more info.) c) www.alsa-project.org is a good place to go if you're having problems with sound under Linux hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Dan,
I don't know if it'll help, but I'll share my personal collection of SUSE Linux sound 'forensics/repair' notes: [snip]
Or.. try something a little lest drastic :-) You did say that your sound card shows up in YAST... try adding your user to the 'audio' group. That might be all you need to do to solve the problem. There have been a few discussions about sound issues on the mailing list. Various sound issues... some solved by tinkering in alsaconfig, others by a simple group change in the User setup. Adding myself to audio group along with remove modprobe/sound and run alsaconfig did not help. I also restarted and still no sound and still the error during boot. Error at boot is: id dep_range_val 0:7fff <4>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:212: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff <7>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:590: hda-intel: get_response timeout: IRS=0x0 Thanks for all your help so far and any other help you may have. I don't have any good news for you, Dan. I've uncovered dozens of unresolved threads like your's covering this exact 'family' of Gateway laptops from as early as Oct. '06 through the start of this week.... virtually every distro is represented, too. It looks to me like *no one* has been able to coax sound out of that mainboard under Linux. If you're up to it (and I'm sure you've done this already) you can Google many variations of "Linux Sigmatel 9250" etc. to see if I've overlooked a successful integration, but I doubt it. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks... I have done so along with have bug open with Novell and also ALSA. Everything I googled on showed nothing which is why I started this route. Thanks for your help. Dan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hi I had this problem with Kaffiene and Amarok in releases 10.1 and 10.2. I would get sound via Yast but nothing from "root" or normal users". It corrected itself once I upgraded my Kaffeine RPMs etc from Packman. regards Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
