AFAIK, it is more a difference of file structures and features thereof. If you control the computer, you minimize the risk, but if Windows crashed with your Mail program open, and files got corrupted, ... I think you know where that goes. Linux has the concept of multiuser, file and directory permissions, etc, which make it safer.
