All, Recently, I upgraded from SuSE 6.1 to 7.1 and tried to upgrade from kernel 2.2.7 to 2.2.18. Now, I can't use the modem to dial in no matter which kernel I use. (a) With the new kernel, kppp complains that there is no built-in or modular support for ppp. I find this odd. Any kernel gurus are invited to look at the .config file after my signature to tell me why. (I also tried NOT setting CONFIG_PPP since this was listed in the Appletalk section and this is not a Mac.) (b) With the old kernel, there is no complaint, but kppp simply initializes the modem/acts like its going to dial, then does nothing. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks for yor time. Steve *** the kernel upgrade .config file *** (And, BTW, I am using 2.2.18 source from SuSE 7.1 CDs and the modules get sent to /lib/modules/2.2.18, but the kernel compiles as 2.2.19 AND it can't find the modules unless I move the directory to /lib/modules/2.2.19. Was CONFIG_PPP set before? Are you editing the .config file directly? If so try going through "make menuconfig" (if compiling under a console) or "make xconfig" (if compiling under a GUI such as KDE).
(b) With the old kernel, there is no complaint, but kppp simply initializes the modem/acts like its going to dial, then does nothing.
Did this happen before you tried upgrading the kernel?
(And, BTW, I am using 2.2.18 source from SuSE 7.1 CDs and the modules get sent to /lib/modules/2.2.18, but the kernel compiles as 2.2.19 AND it can't find the modules unless I move the directory to /lib/modules/2.2.19. Is this normal?) You need to recompile the modules as well. Your best bet is to try a full compile after running through the kernel configuration interface (if you have not done so already) and then run "make modules_install;make install" to install the kernel and module files in the appropriate places.
