[opensuse] 10.3 64 bit and 32 bit systems side by side. How to set grub during second system install?

Hi, I would like to install a 32 bit system and a 64 bit system side by side. The 32 bit is the only system currently on the machine and took the default installation on grub - this is sitting on one hard disk. I would like to install a 64 bit system - on a separate disk. I did try this and forgot to change the grub default settings on the new install. This kills grub completely. The machine will not load grub at all and hence will not boot. What boot loader grub settings should I set during the second system install so that a) I do not kill grub, and b) I do not kill the booting of the current installation?
