Hello, I was considering downloading the ISO image for 9.3 but I noticed that the 5 CD images are for the pro edition while the DVD image said "eval" version. Is this a typo or is SuSE only offering the pro in CD form? Thanks, Babu __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! If you had read README_eval.txt in the iso directory, your question would have been answered: Choose the version you want =========================== * SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 (32-bit version) is available on 5 CD ISO images or on a single DVD ISO image. * SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 (64-bit version) is available on 1 DVD ISO image only. ... What's the difference between the CD and DVD edition ==================================================== * the DVD edition contains the complete 64-bit version of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 as well as a streamlined 32bit version of the software. * the CD edition contains a complete 32-bit version of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3. It including approximately 450 additional packages not available on the 32-bit version included on the downloadable DVD image. These additional packages are mostly language packages for applications and development versions of various software libraries. -- Homepage http://scottj.org XFce desktop environment http://www.xfce.org Goodies for the XFce desktop http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de GPG public key ID: 811B00AB
Hi Scott, In fact I did read the README and it was confusing. Your explanation is confusing. If I understand the README, there should be 5 CDs for 9.3 pro, one DVD for 9.3 pro, and one DVD for 9.3 live eval. There should be 2 DVD iso images. I see only one. I guess I still don't understand the difference because the label on the C dvs DVD is pro vs. eval. Thanks anyway. Babu --- Scott Jones <scottj.org@gmail.com> wrote:

The download DVD, like the boxed set DVD contains both 32 & 64 bit versions. However, it contains fewer 32 bit packages than the boxed set DVD. This may be due to fitting it on a single layer DVD, whereas the boxed DVD is dual layer. Regardless of the install source, missing packages can be installed from the mirrors. You can configure Yast to look to one of those mirrors, instead of the CD/DVD, when installing new packages.

From what I have seen about the DVD on Novell's site, it is a parred down version of the boxed 32/64 bit editions. Here are the md5sum and
the DVD size. SUSE-LINUX-9.3-Eval-DVD.iso 04d2ebe4e0b8b00bc83cdc180a79e667 4.5 GB A friend has a similar DVD for 9.2. It can install 32 or 64 bit version. Such a CD existed for up to SuSE 6.x, from 7.x they discontinued it. Looks like Novell has resurrected the eval. version from 9.x onwards. http://downloademea.novell.com/Download?buildid=w0eJkmg6Xkw~ Excerpt from above link: SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional, Installable DVD Evaluation This free offering will enable Linux users to trial the latest open source desktop, server and application functionality that has become the hallmark of the SUSE LINUX consumer distribution. key features * a comprehensive selection of applications to facilitate a wide variety of computing tasks (office suite, email, Internet, picture processing, multimedia and more) plus a subset of packages for advanced users, including key networking and development packages such as SAMBA, Apache Web server, KDevelop, Mono and more. * 32bit and 64bit version * over 1,000 software packages

Please read the README_eval.txt, in the ISO directory on the mirrors. Here's a couple of quotes. "Choose the version you want =========================== * SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 (32-bit version) is available on 5 CD ISO images or on a single DVD ISO image. * SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 (64-bit version) is available on 1 DVD ISO image only." and "What's the difference between the CD and DVD edition ==================================================== * the DVD edition contains the complete 64-bit version of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 as well as a streamlined 32bit version of the software. * the CD edition contains a complete 32-bit version of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3. These additional packages are mostly language packages for applications and development versions of various software libraries." Also, the DVD ISO is 4.2 GB, which is far more than necessary for a network install.

Yes as you can see the "eval" iso is there, but the OP was looking for a 64 bit install DVD iso which IS missing. A while back I was downloading the EVAL DVD ISO. The size and date changed twice on the ftp.suse.com site. It was different on different US mirrors at the same time. Could it be the iso has been getting changed by whomever uploads to the mirrors. The LIVE iso also was broken on 2 of three downloads. Just tried something different. I usually use http://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.3 to look at the contents (notice http instead of ftp) because it is much faster to browse around. When I used ftp:// instead of http:// the correct sizes show. Perhaps this is a bug in mozilla/firefox/konquerer that needs to be fixed. This is not an issue with the clients... it's a problem with the http protocol (or perhaps Apache). It has issues with large files. I don't recall the limit, but I'd assume anything larger that 1GB or so isn't going to display the correct size. -Dan

You would think that since filesystems have supported files larger than 2 GB for a long time that the folks at apache would have started to as well. Apache has optional support, but currently that would change the apache API, making it incompatible with modules that were compiled against standard apache. AFAIR, 2.2 will have full support for LFS. Philipp

Did you even bother to actually check ftp.suse.com or the mirrors. There is NO DVD iso available. The ONLY iso's available are the 5 cd set and the 64 bit network install iso. Also the eval DVD iso is there, although it is only 184M which will fit on a standard CD instead of a DVD.
Please take a look here: ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/i386/9.3/iso Now tell me what the file "SUSE-9.3-Eval-DVD.iso" is for. While you're at it, read the "README_eval.txt" file, which is immediately above the ISO. Perhaps the mirror you're looking at is missing a few files.

Hello,
I was considering downloading the ISO image for 9.3 but I noticed that the 5 CD images are for the pro edition while the DVD image said "eval" version. Is this a typo or is SuSE only offering the pro in CD form?
Thanks,
Babu
The DVD in the boxed set has all of the packages. The downloadable DVD is missing some. The boxed set DVD also has more packages than the CDs, which have the same number of packages in the boxed set as in the downloadable version. Greg Wallace
