Appreciate your help. The log is there and the permissions are the same as on your system.
Hmmm Does this log give any hints? Does the timestamp match your attempts to startx? grep '(EE)' /var/log/XFree86.0.log should yield any outright errors logged. You might wanna 'clear' the file (rename to XFree86.1.log and create an empty XFree86.0.log) just to be sure that what you see is 'current'... I seem to remember a pair of files called StartLog and ServerLog but I can't find them on my system (7.3)... Anyway, if they're around on yours, that might be a place to look... Also there might be info in ~/.X.err I'd suggets digging a bit first, and if that doesn't turn up anything useful, maybe try to reconfigure with SaX/SaX2 (whichever) I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but it's been so long since I had to deal with any of this stuff (blame/praise goes to yast/sax2) that I'm pretty much out of touch with manual repair... :-P Maybe someone else has better/other ideas? Like Fred :) Jon
