[SuSE Linux] IOmega Ditto 800
As per $SUBJECT. I am now looking at putting one into my Linux box and even maybe compiling it into the kernel. Does anyone have any experience of the Ditto drives with or w/o the Accelerator cards. I wouldn't reccomend a Ditto product of any sort. I was using a Ditto Max Pro, parallel port model for a while. It functioned erraticly under kernel 2.0.36, but when I upgraded to SuSE 6.1 w/ kernel 2.2.5, it ceased to go. I spent several days fiddling with the kernel and ftape, with no success. I broke down and put in a Tecmar 10 Gig SCSI tape drive and an Adaptec 1502, compiled support for the card and SCSI tape drives into the kernel, and it has run beautifully since. Look at it this way, we are talking about *back-ups*, SCSI works easily and reliably, so my advice would be to spring the extra money for a SCSI tape solution. Adding a supported SCSI card is much easier than playing with a perverse item like a Ditto drive. Once the SCSI card works, making a SCSI tape drive function is a snap. -- "Gosh that takes me back ... or forward.
