[opensuse] Chromium 84 + Plasma X.org = blurry graph?
I'm running tumbleweed as of 2020-08-07. I recently upgraded from Vivaldi 3.0 to 3.2 and noticed that some GIFs/PNGs looked blurry. This one in particular: https://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/advchart/frames/frames.asp?symb=SP500 The chart looks fuzzy. I saved the chart as a gif file and then used Ctrl-o to open file:///tmp/big.gif I got the same results. I took a screenshot of vivaldi side by side with gwenview displaying the exact same gif file. https://paste.opensuse.org/73559420 After some experiments I realized that it's Chromium 84 that is causing me this issue. I can switch back and forth between Vivaldi 3.0/3.2 and see the difference. Brave, using Chromium 84 also looks blurry, though Firefox, using its own browsing engine does not. Based on suggestions on Vivaldi forum, I started messing around with the KDE display settings (Compositor, Scaling, Rendering backend). None of my changes made a difference. Lastly, I changed from Plasma under Xorg to Plasma under Wayland. That made a difference. Both Vivaldi and Brave using chromium 84 became as sharp as Vivaldi 3.0 using chromium 81. Unfortunately, I will not be able to stay with Wayland. As soon as I brought up VirtualBox (Windows 10 guest), the system stopped accepting keyboard input. So, a lot of software interactions with my setup. I went back and forth between Wayland and Xorg and verified the issues are not one-time events. So for now I'm going to go back to Vivaldi 3.0 while I experiment with other settings that may fix the interaction. Questions: Anybody else experience this or can duplicate the issue with Vivaldi/Brave? Anybody else have problems with Plasma under Wayland and VirtualBox? Any suggestions? My graphics chip is Intel HD 4600 which is built into Intel Core i7-6700 @ 3.40GHz Thanks in advance. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you get two different qualities of rendered images in any application depending on whether you are using Xorg or Wayland -- this is a bug and needs to be reported to the openSUSE bugzilla. Your description is very good and thorough and with nothing more than slight tweaking would make an excellently written report. That's what I would do. -- David C.
