Hi all, I downloaded all of the kde3.0.3 rpms from suse for my 7.3 distro and did the SuSEconfig and then logged out and back in , and no joy. Tried rebooting, and no joy, still with kde2. What have I forgotten to do? Oh yes, I also did a lp... something which I found someone else mentioned, but forget the command as I'm not at my home pc. Any pointers greatly appreciated. cheers, Bruce
Hi, Edit your /etc/rc.config and change the variable DEFAULT_WM to kde3 run SuSEconfig logout / login and you must be ok. On Tuesday 08 October 2002 14:56, Bruce Scharlau wrote:

If you are running a newer version you will find DEFAULT_WM in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanger -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~dwash " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@arrl.net Info: http://www.austinlug.org

Nick, thanks for the pointers. I tried this last night, and got no joy. SuSEconfig also complained about an unknown wm kde3. This makes me wonder where I tell SuseWm which wm's are available. I know I added it to the list in rc.config, but it doesn't get added to the possible ones in the splashscreen login. How do I get it to appear as an option there? Bruce

Hi Bruce, I found a previous mail that may help you. -------------------------------------------------------- I am trying to configure my SuSE 7.3 system for shutdown after upgrading to KDE 3 with apt-get. I tried to follow these instruction that I picked up from the archive about upgrading from KDE 2 to KDE 3: I have posted the solution to this before ( SuSE 7.3 ) mkdir /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm ln -s /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc ln -s /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xaccess edit the files in /etc/SuSEconfig and change: qt2 -> qt3 kde2 -> kde3 edit /etc/init.d/xdm, change: kde2 -> kde3 Add kde3 to /usr/X11R6/bin/wmlist Add kde3 to the sessionlist in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc Add kde3 to /etc/ld.so.conf run ldconfig run rcxdm start Does this still apply with the latest SuSE packages? If so, why do I see no reference to kde2 (should be changed to kde3 per instructions) in the /etc/SuSEconfig files? Personally, I would rather change these in the /etc/rc.config file as recomended in the SuSEconfig files, if I just could find the entries. ------------------------------------------------------ On Wednesday 09 October 2002 15:37, Bruce Scharlau wrote:

Nick, thanks for this. I had to switch around the ln -s commands as they seemed to be back to front, and then it all worked fine. Thanks again for the help. Bruce At 17:48 09/10/2002 +0300, you wrote:

I am trying to configure my SuSE 7.3 system for shutdown after upgrading to KDE 3 with apt-get. I tried to follow these instruction that I picked up from the archive about upgrading from KDE 2 to KDE 3:
I have posted the solution to this before ( SuSE 7.3 )
mkdir /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm ln -s /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc ln -s /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xaccess
edit the files in /etc/SuSEconfig and change:
qt2 -> qt3 kde2 -> kde3
edit /etc/init.d/xdm, change:
kde2 -> kde3
Add kde3 to /usr/X11R6/bin/wmlist
Add kde3 to the sessionlist in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
Add kde3 to /etc/ld.so.conf
run ldconfig
run rcxdm start
Does this still apply with the latest SuSE packages? If so, why do I see no reference to kde2 (should be changed to kde3 per instructions) in the /etc/SuSEconfig files? Personally, I would rather change these in the /etc/rc.config file as recomended in the SuSEconfig files, if I just could find the entries. ------------------------------------------------------ On Wednesday 09 October 2002 15:37, Bruce Scharlau wrote:
