Which version of KDE are you using, and what behaviour do you expect? In KDE3.2.2 the password is kept only for the action which it was entered for (the password for the root filemanager will not be applied to YaST, for example,) and only for a specified period. It does work, but not in the way you think. It keeps it, until you reboot the computer or logout. It does not keep it forever.
