how to update the firmware under Linux I cannot reconcile your subject and the email body. You were answered. If you bought an HP computer with Linux, the DVD Writer would have a firmware update utility suitable for Linux. If you bought an after market drive, there is no Linux compatible firmware updater available.
Hello Duane,
My name is Kerwyn Ballinger and I work in the HP division that produces the aftermarket DVD Writer such as the dvd640e that you submitted a question under. I am the current product engineer responsible for these products. Aftermarket DVD Writers are purchased in the retail market and should not be confused with DVD Burners pre-installed in PC and Workstation systems (we call these line-fit drives).
After reading your question, it appears to me that you are mistaking my aftermarket DVD Writers with line-fit DVD Burners in Linux systems. I do not support Linux with my aftermarket DVD Writer products. So, the answer to your question is that I am not planning to have a Linux compatible firmware update utility for any of my aftermarket DVD Writers.
Could you be confusing line-fit DVD Burners with my aftermarket products? My advice would be to visit the support page for the HP Linux PC/Workstation model you have and look for the applicable update utility. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me. My contact information is in my signature block.
Thank You,

As I mentioned before, if you for sure want a Linux compatible firmware updater, I can recommend the one here, IF you have a NEC drive. Check out http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/ but it only works with NEC drives. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
