Re: [SLE] Still Notebook Shopping
Hi Tim
another notebook I'm looking at, the Toshiba Satellite 550 MHz Celeron Notebook with 64 megs of ram, Dual Scan 12" LCD, 6 gig hard drive, etc. that is mentioned in the CompUSA ad for today (if you happened to read the ad today). Anyone have any experience with it and Linux?
What's the model number? You might want to check out: http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ Probably repeating that here.
It looks quite nice, and it's price tag at Best Buy is merely $998. Is it too good to be true for a Linux user?
I'm running SuSE 6.3 on a Toshiba Satellite 4060XCDT and have had no issues. The above site was of some assistance for sound and an X Server for 6.1, but the SuSE Knowledge DB also provided me with some answers regarding my keyboard locking up on boot. Thanks, that's helpful for other notebooks I was looking at. The one CompUSA has is the 1675CDS. Perhaps a better question for everyone here is - if you were looking for a lowend notebook (under $1,500) that worked well with Linux, which would you recommend?

Dear SuSE users... I have to reply. I have been watching this thread carefully and though I would pass on our views!! We are VERY successfully using PPC SuSE Linux (6.4/2.2.16) on Apple Mac PowerBook 500's and the responses we get from our clients is that of shear amazement. Terms like - "I've never seen that before" "I didn't know that you could do that" "I thought Apple was having trouble with Linux (sic)!!! "Gee that was fast..." "Even Appletalk [netatalk] is fast" "Are you REALLY" running that laptop as a server?" [Yes with both Linux and MacOS] "Hey that really works" (Connecting to an AppleShare and overlapping SMB Shares) "Gee, thats a nice colour scheme" [Theme Manager --> Bryce (all standard)] and one particularly lame company (read Windows possessed) with an older Management team that has had just about enough from Microsoft and Windows said "Hmmm, I think we'll get one of those to assess it. Can you come back again please!!!" <-- The best... There is ONLY ONE recommendation. Invest in yourselves if you are going to work with the tool. If you spend $1000 on a cheapo, you get cheapo. Invest in something with spectacular capabilities such as the Apple PowerBook and that is NOT saying Intel/AMD based systems are not in the same league, and you will be well rewarded. And with SuSE, well... (However it's about time that SuSE sorted out the sound system on the PowerBook 500. HINT. Still doesn't work so not all is perfect!!! :-)) Regards, Bruce.

Dear Bruce, Thanks for the information. How much (approx.) does a PowerBook 500 (500 MHz?) retail for? Right now, I'm looking at a very nice Dell laptop (Inspiron 3800) that starts at $1,349 with a 600 MHz Celeron processor. I assume the Apple is more, right?
