[opensuse] Getting rid of Firefox 3.0b5
I'm running openSuSE 10.3, and somehow I accidentally installed the Firefox beta. I don't recall ever updating to 3.<anything>, but somehow I ended up with it. Short version: none of the add-ins that I depend on support the beta. In particular, my banking and other financial logons are recorded in DejaClick macros. I'd REALLY like to get rid of the beta, but haven't been able to do so. I've supposedly uninstalled it using YaST, and installed 2.0.0.12, yet when I launch Firefox, it's the beta that appears! Does anyone have an idea how I can remove the beta and get back to the stable release I've been using all this time? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Merci! I've been launching it with the same icon on my desktop that I've always used. If I launch it from the KDE menu, it gets me 2.0.0.13, which is the last version I actually INTENDED to install. Apparently all I need to do is replace that desktop icon with another one from the menu. I didn't realize they could exist in parallel -- all indications were that the beta replaced the original. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm not sure what the difference is, but your suggestion worked on the desktop where I tried it. It *didn't* work on my laptop, where I do most of my browsing. I used YaST to remove Firefox, then went to the openSuSE WIKI (using Konqueror), and installed 2.0.0.13 with one-click from there. When I went to my applications->internet-web browser menu and clicked on the Firefox icon there, beta 5 launched again. I don't know how it can do that, if it's been removed and 2.0.0.13 installed in its place. This is the beta software that won't go away! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You installed MozillaFirefox, but you still had the beta repository configured. That means YaST will take the latest available version, which is 2.9.95 Go into YaST's "software repositories" module and remove the mozilla repository. Then uninstall/reinstall MozillaFirefox again Alternative method: Go to the software management module and search for MozillaFirefox, select it for upgrade, click on the "versions" tab and select 2.0.0.13 Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes! I'd never had reason to do anything with the "versions" tab before. I guess I've always wanted the newest version, so I've never needed to use it. I was able to "update" to 2.0.0.13. Firefox says that the DejaClick protocol isnt' installed, but that seems minor in comparison. Check your local bin directory for a firefox start script. If you installed a binary beta it probably installed in your home directory and put a start file in ~/bin. notice, just for the record, the following thing: I had 2 weeks ago two firefox versions: * standard YaST one (2.0....) * minefield (Firefox nightly build) installed in my own ~/Document folder with a bomb icon but Firefox have natively an update feature and I update from opensuse updater also. Very recently (3 days??) I noticed the minefield icon was replaced by the usual world/firefox icon I noticed also a change in the YaST version, the look being nearly indiscernable from minefield. so much than I removed the minefield link, founding it unnecessary so I beg the two version where going together, probably a backport. As I had only one incompatible module (replaced by an other one), I didn't bother anymore before this thread. jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Understand that the package you d'ld from Mozilla DOESN'T install in the same dir. as the version from openSUSE. If it wasn't an RPM, then you have to manually remove the files. Hmm, doesn't seem like rocket science, exactly.

Perhaps yast isn't aware of your firefox because it was not installed as an rpm package. Perhaps it's a tarball from mozilla.org?
Does anyone have an idea how I can remove the beta and get back to the stable release I've been using all this time?
I'm running ff 3b5 and it's so much nicer than the 2.0.x series that I don't want to go back. Install the nightly tester tools and it will let you make the firefox plugins compatible. If you want to nuke ff 3b5, find out where it is, it won't hide from you. Start with the icon you use to launch firefox - what does the properties option reveal? Sorry, wrong. Things like that do not install by themselves To uninstall, remember what you did to get it, and reverse the procedure Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
