[SLE] XFree-4.0 - Questions
I installed XFree-4.0 and I am starting to feel the differences -- mostly good but some not so good. So, to the questions/problems: - YaST related, System Administration, Settings of susewm --> it tells me that: "System wide default window manager: NO WM found" Before I had several choices, e.g., kde. (probably related, my root account no longer uses kde, but twm...) - YaST related, when I try to manage users and ask for a list of users, it goes back to the menu, rather than give me the list. - Finally, I now get the following error message (not before, and I only installed XFree-4.0): Sorry, your X11 Server lacks DPMS Support Where can I fix this? Using sax2 (great product) and selecting dpms and shutdown time, suspend time and so on does not seem to solve the problem. These both aren't related to the upgrade, though I can't help you as to what is happening here.

In the section Module, try to add
Load "dpms"
and see if that helps.

The same things are happing to me. They are related to the upgrade to 4.0. Yast now only works correctly when run at run level-2. The root login at run level-3 no longer starts kde either. It goes into somthing I've never seen before. Have you noticed that Soffice wont't run any more either. I've had to go back to 3.3.5-28. This only happens when using the SuSE supplied rpm's. If You get it directly from xfree.org and explicitly install not over writing any config files it works pretty well. These YaST problems and such won't pop up. Even so I've gone back to 3.3.5 because the 3D acceleration module 'glx' kills my X-session when trying to run any 3D stuff. At least it worked in 3.3.5. Yep, I now know that the wmlist is missing in the XFree86 4.0 rpm. That's why no choice is possible in YaST.

Yep, GLX and the DRI are in their early stages. The only cards that currently
are supported are 3Dfx with Matrox and ATI coming rsn.

Well, finally someone who is having troubles with SuSE's rpm's as much as I am. I followed their instructions to the letter and totally screwed up my x system. I am now back to 3.3.6 but may try downloading from xfree.org as you suggested. On Wed, 29 Mar 2000, Mark Hounschell wrote: > Philipp Thomas wrote: > > > > * Alvaro A. Looks like "wmlist" is missing in XFree86 4.0. This script lists all available window managers.
- YaST related, when I try to manage users and ask for a list of users, it goes back to the menu, rather than give me the list.
Hmm, this is odd? I do not see the relation to XFree86 4.0 here.

Probably the X-Server has not been compiled with DPMS support? He may be using an xterm and when he presses a function key it's interpreted as an escape. This was discussed before in the list, but I don't remember what are the alternative keyboard combinations for the function keys. -- Rafael Herrera -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
