David, by now you have seen what ."Carlos E. R." wrote on Sat, 5 Apr 2003 6:42 EST in reply to your earlier post, namely:
Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.susewm... RM: cannot remove `/etc/X11/susewm/kde_tmp_dir_old/Settings/YaST/notinstalled/Graphics/Viewer/pixieplus-kde.desktop': Permission denied
I assume you are "root" when running this. If you are, check that that file does exist, and try to delete it manually. If you can't, it is posible you have a corrupted filesystem, and you need to repair it. If it is a reiserfs, it has been comented on this list a few times.

Carlos, who is much more knowledgeable than me, said it better than I did. I was assuming you were trying to update something like KDE, GNOME, or adding a program. But I still don't know !!! It would be helpful if you told us what lead up to the problem. Carlos's analysis, based on your data, is you probably have a corrupted file. My question would be how did it get corrupted.
Gar, I can find no package pixieplus. David
The reason my eyes were drawn to "pixie plus" is IIRC it has been commented on this list or else the KDE list, that "pixieplus" was giving problems with new KDE 3.1.1 install. (my other suggestion still apply along w/ what Carlos is suggesting) You might want to use locate or find to see if there are other places "pixieplus" is, and you need to do that for the other problems files on your list --- HTH, Gar __________________________________________________________________ Try AOL and get 1045 hours FREE for 45 days! http://free.aol.com/tryaolfree/index.adp?375380 Get AOL Instant Messenger 5.1 for FREE! Gar, What led up to this is trying to upgrade my kernel in 8.0 to the latest one on apt. After doing this with synaptic and doing mk_initrd and lilo I rebooted to find that I could not get into kde or gnome because of dependacy problems, trying to download the individual rpms I kept getting more dependacies. so I did a apt-get -f install and upgraded my packages. Kde now works and so far most of my apps work, not all. So this is where I am at. The output of locate pixie plus is> dbtrol@linux:~> locate pixieplus

FYI, this could not have been caused by the kernel upgrade (except perhaps with graphics drm modules, but doubtful). My best guess is that apt-get uninstalled packages you needed for kde or gnome because of dependency issues. I would NOT suggest using -f, but figuring out the problems and fixing them (if need be) manually, i.e. installing a needed package for a dependency, uninstalling a package because of a conflict, etc. I once (see I learn quickly ;-) ) used apt-get and because of packaging errors (need wrong qt IIRC), it uninstalled kde for me (took about 1/2 hour to reinstall kde)

Check with either Yast, Kpackage, apt-get, or rpm to see if your non working programs are installed still.
So I am confused.
Apt-get is a great tool, but I would encourage care in its use. It is quite powerful, but with the power to do great things comes the potential to do great harm.
