Hi there, I know this is off topic but since there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks on this site I thought "what the heck". Anyway, here goes. I was working on my brand new PC when suddenly without warning it went dead. The green "Power On" light didn't go out but the screen just went black. A reset will cause just a littel bit of hardddrive activity; the orange light that indicates harddrive activity will briefly flicker a little bit. The power button doesn't function anymore either when I try to turn it off. The only thing left to do was to turn off the power on the main switch on the back. I opened op the box and fiddled a little with the connections but to no avail. And when I turn it on it doesn't even reach the phase where I can enter the CMOS settings - the screen just shows those digits it's supposed to show when juice kicks in and then it dies. There's no harddrice activity whatsoever (I think it's almost certain it's not the harddrive that's at fault since it doesn't even reach the memory check). I'm at loss here! Can anyone help me out? My PC is configured like this: motherboard: Epox EP-7KXA with VIA KX133 chipset cpu: AMD Athlon 650MHz RAM: Dimm 256MB 133MHz harddrive: Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 13,6GB (7.200rpm) CD-ROM: AOpen 48x video: Matrox Millennium G400, 32MB sound: Soundblaster 128 ethernet: 3Com 3C905 -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". This really sounds like something you need to work out with your hardware... regardless of any OS. For starters... I would check that your processor and memory is seated properly... among other things. If all else fails... take everything apart and build it again with care. You might also try clearing CMOS (holding down 'insert' when you turn on the computer might do the trick... although it varies somewhat from board to board) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I'm no hardware expert either, but it seems pretty clear that the problem is electrical, something like a short somewhere, a misplaced cable, or a blown circuit on your motherboard. (I have an old motherboard with nonworking serial i/o; I assume that the relevant IC was blown somehow.) The fact that the power button doesn't function is a big clue. I'd try removing everything that doesn't have to be there: hard drive, CD-ROM, sound, and ethernet. You can even try removing all but one memory module if you have more than one. If that enables you to boot from a floppy (like the SuSE boot disk), then just put the items back, one by one. do you have the speaker from the case plugged in to the motherboard and are
you getting any beeps (they can be deciphered to determine the problem).
double check (and I'll bet you already have) the jumpers for cpu clock and
multiplier.
and like someone else said, definitely clear the cmos.
Hope thats helpful....

Hello Yatsen, Recently had the same problem. Check if expansion boards are fitted well and if ventilators are not shutting down or are not running altogether. I had this happen to me last weekend. Is your powersupply up to speck (300 Watt)? These to sometimes quit on you. Hi there, Actually the output of the powersupply is 235W. The expansion boards are fitted well and the fans are running fine - in fact they're the only things that seem to run fine!

It sounds like it could be a bad video card. Does your system beep when you try to start it up? If not, does it give an error code? Some bios will do this when they start up if there is an error of some kind. Victor On Mon, 20 Mar 2000, Yatsen Ng wrote:

you do have a 300Watt power supply that is listed on the AMD approved products list, correct? it truely is very picky. -- ======================================================================== Rocky McGaugh Atipa Linux Solutions Linux Systems Engineer www.atipa.com rocky@smluc.org rmcgaugh@atipa.com ======================================================================== On Mon, 20 Mar 2000, Yatsen Ng wrote:
