Re:[SLE] Quake 3 and sound in Suse 9
hi, got the same problem as you : Since I installed SuSE 9.0, no sound with quake 3, with the same error message. And I can't get alsa ouput work with xmms (oss works fine). It tells me there is no output device. What kind of chip you are using for sound ? I use a SiS chipset for sound, the one which is integrated on the motherboard. I tried different kernel (2.4.22 and 2.4.23rcX) and i updated the alsa drivers, but this did not fix the sound problem with quake 3 and xmms. I think I will buy a cheap sound blaster live which is better supported. ---------- Initial Header ----------- From : Glenn Pedersen <glennped@optusnet.com.au> To : Suse <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Cc : Date : Fri, 28 Nov 2003 09:29:27 +1000 Subject : [SLE] Quake 3 and sound in Suse 9 Hi guys, Just recently got Suse 9 and am having problems with the sound in quake3. Btw this worked fine in 8.2. I get no sound at all and this is the error message that i get from the console. btw i have tried as root and the same thing happens. ------- sound initialization ------- Could not mmap dma buffer PROT_WRITE|PROT_READ trying mmap PROT_WRITE (with associated better compatibility / less performance code) /dev/dsp: Input/output error Could not mmap /dev/dsp ------------------------------------ Any ideas? Damn, I have an onboard sound chip as well. Looking at YAST it tells me its an VT8233 AC97. Thats a shame if thats the case then as I am quite happy with the on board sound. Ill have to try Xmms and see what happens. Still if I cant get it to work I might have to see what a sound blaster live is worth i guess :) Cheers, Glenn

I remember someone posted that the latest updated kernel from SuSE solves the problem. Update available via YOU. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Graham Smith --------------------------------------------------------- I just updated the Kernel via YOU to -144 but now I cant get 3d as the kernel headers are different :)
I guess I have to d/l the source and re do the nvidia drivers? Cheers, Glenn

The updated kernel did not solve the problem but in case anyone else is having the same problem I found this. echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" >/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss I pasted that as su and then quake 3 works fine with i guess using oss drivers. Does anyone here actually know what the above does? Cheers, Glenn
