[opensuse] New ATI Driver (8.10) Released Today

Listmates, The new ATI driver Release 8.10 (Version 8.542). I have installed it and I'm still looking at it. I've notice a bit of unexplained sluggishness when compared to the 8.532 driver. I would be interested in feedback on others experience. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Ok, There is an issue here. Under the new 8.10 driver glxgears yields 532 FPS and applications seems to be sluggish opening. I reinstalled the 8.9 driver and glxgears yields 1004 FPS and applications are back to opening as usual. I used the same xorg.conf with both driver installs and I inspected Xorg.0.log on each occasion for any additional clues as to what could be going on, but there were no surprises in the log file. I suspect changes have been made to support the newer 3800 and 4800 level cards that may be having adverse affect on older card performance under the driver. This is supposition. However, that only heightens my curiosity as to what other see with this new driver. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. What we see is a good reason to wait for 8.11. Thanks for volunteering your machine for the tests. ;-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for volunteering your machine for the tests. ;-) I know I am getting pissed about the driver in the SUSE repo and I am waiting for good reason install the driver with ATIs .run file, I guess this is not it. -- "We must plan for freedom, and not only for security, if for no other reason than only freedom can make security more secure." Adam, The 8.9 driver (Version 8.532) has been a very solid driver, and in my opinion, the best release yet. The openSuSE repositories currently have the 8.8 driver (Version 8.522) which was also a solid driver. For reasons I don't yet understand, the 8.10 driver (Version 8.542) runs slow. It runs fine, works with Compiz fine, it is just slow. If you want to try the driver from ATI, I suggest you download the 8.9 driver which is: ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run You can download it at: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/previous/linux64-rf-cat89.html You can get any of the drivers (7.11 - 8.10) from: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/radeonprevious-linux64.html Though the link says 'linux64', the drivers are for both i386 and x86_64. For install instructions see: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/ati/ati_quick-reference The quick reference also contains a link to a script that will automate most of the driver install for you. Have fun. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. By biggest problem is with the 8.8 driver, installed via RPM from the repo, is with openGL screen savers in KDE 4.1.x they are distorted and freezes up my screen when I move the mouse or hit a key to clear the screen saver. Here is some pictures to show what I am talking about: http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=media4ot2.jpg http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=media3ev9.jpg http://img376.imageshack.us/my.php?image=media2ip9.jpg http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=media1si2.jpg If this is still a problem with the 8.9 and above drivers then there is not point in my upgrading. Also how are would it be to go from the RPM driver to that driver I wonder. Adam, In short, "dunno?" It would be worth a try. The ATI driver has come a long way since 8.4. The new driver install takes about 3 minutes. So, you have nothing to lose in trying the upgrade. P.S. Your experience is just another reason why I still run kde 3.5.9. Let us all pray it is usable in 11.1. As delivered with 11.0, it was more of a bad joke than a desktop.... -- David C. Best thing to do is _NOT_ use opengl screensavers. Ben -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
