[opensuse] displaymanager priority for plain tumbleweed - (was login screen changed after tumbleweed dup)
Hi, 1) what is for a new plain tumbleweed the correct priority for the displaymanagers? with other words: what is the default displaymananger for opensuse-tumbleweed-kde 2) in what file is this stored? i have on some tumbleweed (only updated from tumbleweed to tumbleweed): yast-alternatives (never touched this settings any time before): default-displaymanager ............. (auto): select priority /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/console 5 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/lightdm 35 ???????????? /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/ssdm 25 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/xdm 10 and on the other tumbleweed (updated from older opensuse versions to tumbleweed): select priority /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/console 5 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/kdm 15 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/lightdm 15 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/ssdm 25 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/xdm 10 i would like to set it to the "standard" for plain tumbleweed, so would be nice to know what it is. simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

and on the other tumbleweed (updated from older opensuse versions to tumbleweed):
select priority /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/console 5 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/kdm 15 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/lightdm 15 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/ssdm 25 /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/xdm 10
i would like to set it to the "standard" for plain tumbleweed, so would be nice to know what it is.
simoN sddm is the default displaymanager for KDE.

To be honest, I have no idea what these priority numbers mean or do.
if i understood correct, it will be a automatic selection of the highest number -> for this i need the file where this number is in. to change the "35" for (my) lightdm back to 15 help in yast will tell me that the numbers where designed from the packed managers to make usefull standards for the system. simoN -- becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

a few hints to find a solution: 1. all that jazz is "managed" by update-alternatives 2. list all the files / dirs of the "update-alternatives" package: #> rpm -ql update-alternatives 3. there should be a directory listed, outside of /etc/... , in older Leap 42 versions, it was "/var/lib/rpm/alternatives/" 4. in this directory there should be a file default-displaymanager or similar 5. in this (text-)file the displaymanagers and their priorities are listed 6. edit to your liking and check again. NOT nice, but it works (or at least worked on the last Leap 42 system I had to modify). If anyone knows the "offical way" to (re-)assign prio numbers, please tell. - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Hi yamban, many thanks, your tip did the trick: > 3. there should be a directory listed, outside of /etc/... , in older > Leap 42 versions, it was "/var/lib/rpm/alternatives/" in opensuse tumbleweed it is "/var/lib/alternatives/" > > 4. in this directory there should be a file default-displaymanager or similar also in opensuse tumbleweed > 5. in this (text-)file the displaymanagers and their priorities are listed > > 6. edit to your liking and check again. i did change the "35" back to 15 for lightdm - before i have checked at a new tumbleweed installation, there it is 15 for lightdm then i was in yast alternatives and changed manually to sddm, say ok. go in again and changed back to "automatic" now the automatic works as it should and has chosen sddm (number 25) the only open question is still, why it was changed by a tumbleweed dup....... but for me its solved. simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
