I was sure in the previous SuSE's that I could do a boot install from the DVD. With 8 though I was only able to boot from the CDs :( Is this a feature of 8? Jamie -- Jamie O'Shaughnessy jamie.oshaughnessy@ntlworld.com

Not at all...I booted and upgraded from the dvd on two machines...Both flawlessly -- Regards Ted Wager Linux user
I just have to get this off my chest... I've been a long term SuSE user, from the 5.x days. Each time the distribution has got better, nicer install and of course better apps. Over the last 2 weeks I've had to upgrade my WinME to WinXP Pro on my machine - it's been a long time since I last installed a MS OS - what a pain that was. Endless problems, the install took *ages* (with SuSE I'm used to installing my OS and *all* my apps in well under a hour) and XP isn't happy with the 2 sticks of memory I have - so now I can only have 1 stick in. MS say it's hardware, hardware companies say it's MS's OS. All I know is that the machine has been running WinME and SuSE 7.x in that configuration for nearly 2 years without a hitch - go figure :) I was only installing XP out of interest but was more happy to get 8.0 and a new hard disk to install it on. Of course the install was *far* less painful, miles quicker and things pretty much worked. However, there were still niggling problems and after 2 weeks struggling with XP it was the last thing I wanted. Either I, or other people, have posted about the problems, so to summarize: - USB mouse stopped working, fixed by reading this list - GPG problem with YOU, an annoyance, not fixed - Nvidia drivers not working at resolutions above 1280x1024 (did in 7.x) - Can't boot install from DVD (could with 7.x) - Demise of Yast1. Being a long time suse user, yast1 was my friend. Miles quicker than the bloaty yast2. The char mode yast2 is a very poor UI compared with yast1. I'll get over this, in time. Now my only real complaint is, I'd wish SuSE would try a bit harder to fix such niggly problems (it's not as though I'm running unusual hardware) rather than spend time on even more flashy GUI installs. The installs are nice, very easy and quick and I'm sure they'll bring more people to linux. At least that's the idea - however, if such new users have niggling problems they may not stick with linux very long and return to their legacy OSes (more fool them). One very positive thing is, given problmes like above, I *know* they will be resolvable and will get fixed very soon. With XP on the other hand, I can only hope a service pack comes out in a few months time and it may fix my problems. Long live SuSE and Linux. :) Just had to blow off steam a little.
