Hello, I have a few questions about schemes on the laptop. How do I go about changing the settings of eth0? For example, I have a 10/100 card in the mini-PCI slot, one on the port replicator and a wireless card. So, what I need is to have eth0 to be the PR's NIC when plugged into it, wireless card when at one, and otherwise be the mini-PCI card. I am using suse 7.3, if anyone has experience doing this, i'd appreciate the help. I've read through the pages i can find in the SDB and howtos, but they all seem to deal with changing the settings of one card in (preferably in the pcmcia slot). Hi Rick, I suggest you have a look at netenv. It is very easy to setup and customise. http://netenv.sourceforge.net/ Regards, Graham Smith ----------------------------------------
I have a related question. My DELL laptop, when booting Win NT 4, knows how to set up for "Docking Station" (using the big external monitor, the NIC in the docking station, and other devices) versus "Mobile" (using the LCD screen and either a PCMCIA modem or a PCMCIA ethernet card). These appear as onscreen selections early in the boot process... once Win NT has been chosen. However, this is a dual-boot machine with SuSE 7.3, which I'm now using more than I do the Windows. When booting Linux, I don't get a choice of "Docking Station" or "Mobile" configurations/profiles. QUESTION: How can I set up equivalent "Docking Station" and "Mobile" profiles that would come up *at* or before login? Similarly, I manually select between display on the LCD or display on the external monitor by pressing [Fn][F8] to cycle among LCD-only, both, and external-only. How can I get at these functions on the command line or in a config file? I asked DELL, and they told me: "Sorry. We don't support dual-boot." So, I said "How about if I just wipe the Win NT partition?" DELL came back with: "Sorry. The division of DELL that sells computers pre-loaded with Linux is separate from the division that is 'supporting' you. We have no-one who knows Linux, here. Go ask your Linux supplier." Sheesh! Of course, as you know the Knowledge Base doesn't cover this particular question. I'm using a Dell C600, SuSE 7.3, Gnome. Please talk in Linux baby-talk. I'm not good at this, yet. :-) -- Kevin McLauchlan Chrysalis-ITS, Inc. "Ultimate Trust(TM)"

As per my previous answer try netenv it should solve this problem. It won't detect whether you have plugged into the docking station automatically, but at boot it brings up a menu which you can select how you wish to boot. It allows you to run scripts before the network is setup and to alter/replace the /etc/fstab file. I use this feature to change NFS mounts in my laptop depending if I'm at home or at work. http://netenv.sourceforge.net/

Can't answer this question, someone else may have an answer. Regards, Graham Smith ----------------------------------------
