I use SuSE 6.4 (Kernel 2.2.14) and I have tried to compile a 2.2.16 Kernel What I did:
cp /lib/modules/2.2.14 /lib/modules/2.2.16 lx_suse 7.0 download modules 7.0 download usb download rpm -i lx_suse.rpm rpm -U modules-2.3-61.i386.rpm rpm -U usb.rpm cd /usr/src/linux make clonconfig make xconfig (usb-optionens adapted) make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz cp system.map /boot/system.map lilo shutdown -r 0
the result rebooting: Everything is ok until... Loading module aic7xxx ... insmod: aic7xxx: no module found by that name kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block_major_8, errorno2 VFS: Cannot open root device 08:03 Kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on 08:03§ Note: - Module aic7xxx.o exists in /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc - /etc/modules.conf has the same entries as the old one Who knows, what I did wrong? -- fabio vassalli vassalli@smb.sams.ch geneva

hmmmm, seems we had the same problem...only I kept the old system.map and I disabled usb kernel support, but loadable has module. I also don't have any scsi adaptors, otherwise I don't see any problem at all...
