I have done a clean install of SuSE7.2 and am getting some peculiar error messages in the console log when I log in. It is a "Default with Office" installation. When logging in as ROOT, I get: linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 linux insmod: insmod: a module named snd-pcm-plugin already exists linux insmod: insmod: insmod sound-service-0-3 failed When logging in as USER, I get: (sometimes the line) linux insmod: insmod: a module named snd-pcm-plugin already exists (other times the line) linux insmod: insmod: a module named snd-mixer-oss already exists (then there is either the line) linux insmod: insmod: insmod sound-service-0-0 failed (or the line) linux insmod: insmod: insmod sound-service-0-3 failed (very occasionally it is both of these two previous lines) My sound card is a sound Blaster PCI 128 and previous SuSE versions have had no problems with it. The 7.2 installation automatically found it correctly. I have another sound problem with the new installation. In case it is tied up with the above one, I am sending it in the same posting. If it isn't, sorry to send two separate problems together. When the KDE desktop starts, I get the usual musical phrase ( the one which starts quietly and then builds up in volume), but superimposed on top of it is a "jangling" sound of what sound like sleigh bells. These two together sound diabolical! I have been into "KDE System Notifications" and have tried various things to kill the sleigh bells and just leave the usual music. But when the effects go, the music goes as well. Is there a way of losing just the sound effects? The answer is probably staring me in the face! Again, I have not had this with previous versions. Music CDs play correctly. Any help will be very much appreciated. Many thanks Keith
I got the same problems friend. I think that there is more to this problem that folks have been leading on. So far the suggestions have been, modify modules.conf backup my partitions reinstall SuSE 7.2 buy a new sound card. modifying the modules.conf has wasted way too much of my time at this point. it hasn't helped fix anything (although it hasn't hurt either.) Reinstalling 7GB just don't sound very fun right now. ;o) Buy a new sound card? Why it worked perfectly before. IT works perfectly in just about any other OS I own. So far the suggestions have been, I've also got the same problems - with similar looking error messages. I'm running SuSE 7.0, but I've had the messages ever since I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.5. One question - do either of you have any problems with your sound card other than the error messages. From what Keith goes on to say about the KDE startup sounds, it seems that at least he's getting sound out of it. My soundcard also seems to be working fine, although I've only tried it with wave and line-in stuff - no CDs or MIDI. Olly

did you also compile the alsa packages for the new kernel ? Sounds to me [ha ha, pun intended] that you didn't. A quick FYI followup. I have not recompiled my kernel. I know how, but I have not done that. So we can eliminate that as a problem. (at least for my box) All the *.mp3 *.wav sounds have and are working, I only have trouble with midi files and midi here. More thoughts to ponder... If ALSA and OSS are conflicting then how do we decide to go with one or the other, (without reinstalling 7GB.) Which one should be removed? I have a feeling / leaning toward removing OSS... <RANT> I never had OSS on any of my boxes before, I always used "soundcfg" and I always thought OSS was commercial from Caldera.... Plus my sound card always worked flawlessly (which is really why I bought the soundblaster 16 in the first place.) I must admit I have never seen all these sound programs that come with SuSE. (very impressive.) But I have only ever used Kmid Kmidi (whatever it is bundled in mandrake) It really wouldn't be an issue with me except; I would like to hear the drum machines ;o) I play guitar, so I don't really use the computer for music. Just my Carvin Amps and my ol' Ibanez. (I use a tape deck to record) On Friday 06 July 2001 07:29 am, you wrote:

Thanks to all who have replied so far. I haven't tried midi, so can't comment on that with my set-up. Music CDs play perfectly well. This is the first time I have had any sound problems with SuSE. I have done some more tests. I replaced 7.2 with a clean installation of 7.1 and all was OK. There were no error messages and the KDE desktop music was clean. Then I did an "upgrade", rather than a clean installation, from 7.1 to 7.2 and the faults came back. Finally I have done another clean installation, this time to lose 7.1 off the drive and get back to just a 7.2. That's where things stand at the moment. Looking at what is installed with YAST, it doesn't appear that OSS is installed, only ALSA. I did not compile anything. I just did a normal installation from the CDs which SuSE supplied. Cheers Keith

One Answer - NO !!! There are just these anoying fake-error-messages and when I click on an mp3-file it blows your brains outta your scull (caused by the volume). So what in hell is up there ??? As far as I'm concerned I decided to ignore the 'error messages'. I have a PCI 128 card with an Ensonic ES1371 chip. The fake error messages sound like this: Jul 6 19:13:33 linux insmod: insmod: a module named soundcore already exists Jul 6 19:13:33 linux insmod: insmod: insmod char-major-14 failed Jul 6 19:13:33 linux insmod: insmod: a module named gameport already exists Jul 6 19:13:33 linux insmod: insmod: insmod char-major-14 failed Jul 6 19:13:33 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 Jul 6 19:13:33 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0 Jul 6 19:13:33 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 Jul 6 19:13:33 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3 So maybe just forget about that ??? I'm not sure, but as long as everything is working, I don't really mind Cheers ... Wolfi ================================== mailto:wolfi_z@web.de

I have sound working correctly, so at least it's possible. My speculation is that you have some mixture of OSS and Alsa sound modules; you should go with one or the other. Also check your kernel modules in /lib/modules; there may be some extras there that are the cause of the difficulty (it's happened to me). I'm using Alsa. There are docs on it in /usr/share/docs/packages. Paul
